Lady Gaga praises Pinay drag queens’ ‘Abracadabra’ performance

by Joanna Deala

A SIMPLE heart reaction from their idols on social media already means so much for a fan, what more if they are called “a superstar?”

This is a question one should ask Filipina drag queens Precious Paula Nicole and Popstar Bench, whose performance of “Abracadabra” got praised by none other than 14-time Grammy winner Lady Gaga.

Precious shared her and Bench’s dance performance of Gaga’s newest single on TikTok, featuring two versions of the global pop star from the music video: the one clad in an all-white ensemble (performed by Bench) and the “lady in red” (portrayed by Precious).

The drag queens prepared the stage to celebrate Rampa Club’s first anniversary in Quezon City.

This was noticed and reposted by Gaga on her TikTok page.

“You are a superstar,” said the American singer-songwriter.

Precious replied to Gaga’s comment with, “Thank you, Mother.”

Drag queen Tiny Deluxe posted another video of Precious and Bench’s “Abracadabra” dance on TikTok, which Gaga reposted on her official account.

The pop icon also commented, “If I were in the audience I would be help [and] screaming.”

‘A full circle moment’

On Instagram, Bench described their “Abracadabra” performance as “a full circle moment” for her, as someone who went from impersonating Gaga to being recognized by her.

This was also Bench’s way to celebrate her 12th year in the drag industry and honor the “inspirational pop icon” she always admires.

“Bonggang pasasalamat sa lahat ng mga taong hindi napagod tumayo habang inaabot namin ang tala!” Bench wrote.

Music comeback

“Abracadabra” is part of Gaga’s forthcoming album, “Mayhem,” set to be released on March 7.

The song’s music video—co-directed by Gaga, Parris Goebel, and Bethany Vargas—showcased “a dance battle between the singer’s light and dark sides.”

As of writing, “Abracadabra’s” music video raked in over 33 million views on YouTube.

“Mayhem” follows Gaga’s “Harlequin” album in 2024, which will feature 14 tracks. The new album will include “Disease” and “Die With A Smile,” which were both released last year.

Gaga likened her creative process for “Mayhem” to “reassembling a shattered mirror.”

“Even if you can’t put the pieces back together perfectly, you can create something beautiful and whole in its own new way,” she said.

Gaga is among the international artists several millennials and Gen Zs grew up listening to.

She is known for her hit songs “Bad Romance,” “Poker Face,” “Just Dance,” and “Telephone,” among others.
