READY to make a wish? Because South Korean actor Kim Woo Bin might make that happen as he portrays a genie in the forthcoming fantasy romantic-comedy series, “Genie, Make a Wish.”
This new Korean drama is Kim’s reunion project with his “Uncontrollably Fond” co-star Suzy.
Netflix announced on Wednesday, August 20, that “Genie, Make a Wish” will premiere on its platform beginning on October 3, just in time for the celebration of Chuseok, a major mid-autumn harvest festival and a three-day holiday in South Korea.
The global streaming platform dropped a 46-second clip featuring Suzy holding an antique lamp, while a long-haired Kim magically appears beside her.
“Little girl made of clay, I will scour the world and find you again. Remember this, I will seek you out, and my name is Iblis,” a voice over could be heard saying.
“Genie, Make a Wish” follows a mysterious spirit Genie, played by Kim, who awakens from a thousand-year slumber to grant three life-changing wishes to Ka-young, portrayed by Suzy, the new owner of a magical lamp.
Ka-young is described as a “cold, impassive” woman who lives with her grandmother. Her grandmother’s “watchful eye and tough-love approach” have helped Ka-young’s “psychopathic tendencies” in check.
“As Genie tries to adjust to the modern world with his devilish ways, he and the emotionally guarded Ka-young find themselves drawn into an unexpected and electrifying romance,” Netflix said in a press statement.
An article by Netflix Tudum revealed other cast members, including Ahn Eun-jin from “Hospital Playlist” as the mysterious Mi-joo; Noh Sang-hyun from “Love in the Big City” as Soo-hyun; Ko Kyu-pil from “The Roundup: No Way Out” as Sayyid; and Lee Zoo-young from “The 8 Show” as Min-ji.
“Genie, Make a Wish” is directed by Lee Byeong-heon of “Extreme Job” and written by Kim Eun-sook of “The Glory.”
Past collab
Kim and Suzy were first paired up in “Uncontrollably Fond, a 2016 melodrama series known for K-drama fans for its tragic storyline.
Kim portrayed Shin Joon-young, a top actor-singer, while Suzy played the role of a documentary producer named Noh Eul. They were high school sweethearts who parted ways but later reunited as adults.
Before this, the two Korean celebrities starred in several hit K-dramas, including “School 2013,” “The Heirs,” and “Our Blues” for Kim, and “Dream High,” “While You Were Sleeping,” and “Start-Up” for Suzy.
In 2017, Kim took a hiatus from acting to seek treatment for nasopharyngeal cancer. He made a comeback to the screen in 2022.
Meanwhile, Suzy is also known as a former member of the Korean girl group Miss A, who is behind the hit song “Bad Girl Good Girl.”
Suzy has been putting out music as a solo artist. Her latest single, “Come back,” was released in February 2025.
