Julia Barretto, ‘XO, Kitty’ star Lee Sang-heon collaborate in new rom-com series

by Joanna Deala

WHEN an international star visits the Philippines, locals automatically think that they’re either on a short vacation, have an event to hold, or have a project to work on.

It is the latter for South Korean actor Lee Sang-heon, who has been spotted in the metro the past few days with Filipina actress Julia Barretto, based on the photos shared by fan page Annyeong Oppa on X (formerly Twitter).

The actor was seen having a chit-chat with Barretto and making some Filipino food like the Christmas staple puto bumbong.

The reason why they’re together? It’s because two young celebrities are set to star in a new digital series titled “Secret Ingredient.”

Streaming platform Viu Philippines spilled the beans on Friday on social media, posting a photo of Barretto and Lee with Indonesian actor and film producer Nicholas Saputra.

According to ABS-CBN News, “Secret Ingredient” is a romantic drama-comedy series that will center on a Korean social elite named Hajoon (to be portrayed by Lee), who crosses paths with his lost love Maya (to be played by Barretto).

Saputra will play the role of one of the chefs in the forthcoming series.

The six-episode series is expected to highlight the diverse cultures and cuisines of the Philippines, South Korea, and Indonesia.

VIU Philippines also shared clips from the exclusive dinner attended by the cast and crew of “Secret Ingredient.”

“We can’t wait to embark on a love-filled culinary journey blending different cultures with you all!” it said.

In the video, Barretto expressed her thoughts on being part of the new series with the two international actors.

“I feel so honored and really excited to be part of this very special project,” she said.

Lee also said that he’s “happy” to be part of the project.

Meanwhile, Saputra thanked everyone who made “Secret Ingredient” possible.

The streaming platform partnered with Unilever for the digital series. This also marks the first collaboration between Unilever Philippines and Indonesia, according to Unilever Nutrition SEA and Indonesia Macce Samarista.

“Secret Ingredient” will be directed by Jo Young-gwang. The premiere date for the series has yet to be announced, but it will be available on Viu.

Before this, the 27-year-old Korean actor had shared a photo of him and Barretto on his Instagram story, along with the hashtag “secret project” and tagged the Pinay actress. Barretto then shared the story with a finger heart emoji.

On January 12, the 26-year-old actress posted several photos of her on Instagram where she was seen taking culinary lessons.

“Learning something new, for something new,” she said.

Previous project

Lee gained popularity when he starred in the hit rom-com series “XO, Kitty,” a spin-off of the “To All the Boys” film series based on the titular book trilogy written by Jenny Han.

The actor played the role of Min-ho, the chic and sassy classmate of protagonist Kitty. The two initially did not get along well, until Min-ho started developing romantic feelings for Kitty.

The first season of “XO, Kitty” is available on Netflix. It is set to return for a second season.

New film

Aside from the new digital series, Barretto is also starring alongside seasoned actor Aga Muhlach for the forthcoming film “Ikaw Pa Rin Ang Pipiliin Ko.”

Based on its trailer, Barretto will play the role of a choir member, while Muhlach portrays the role of a conductor and arranger. The two grow closer together as Muhlach’s role helps Barretto’s character in enhancing her singing skills.

Written and directed by Denise O’hara, “Ikaw Pa Rin Ang Pipiliin Ko” will feature Baguio-based band Cup of Joe’s song of the same name as its soundtrack.

The rising OPM band–composed of Gian Bernardino, Raphaell Ridao, Gabriel Fernandez, CJ Fernandez, Raphael Severino and Xen Gareza–is also featured in the film.

The movie is set to hit Philippine theaters on February 7.
