BEFORE the birth of popular Gen Z love teams, there were sensational pairings that undeniably brought a handful of kilig to Filipino viewers back in the day.
Case in point: “MarJo,” the tandem of Marvin Agustin and Jolina Magdangal.
You may already have heard that “MarJo” was among the most popular love teams in the ‘90s, starring in several beloved youth-oriented and romantic-comedy films. One was the 1998 romantic-comedy film “Labs Kita… Okey ka Lang?” where Jolina’s iconic “Oh yes! Kaibigan mo ‘ko! Kaibigan mo lang ako!” dialogue came from.
Good news for today’s generation of viewers because they will witness the overflowing chemistry of “MarJo” once more with their comeback big-screen project, “Ex Ex Lovers.”
Film production company Project 8 Projects confirmed Jolina and Marvin’s reunion film through a short clip where the two recreated posters of some of their popular films like “Labs Kita… Okey ka Lang?” “Hey Babe!” and “Flames: The Movie.”
“Huyyy!!! Ito na ang comeback na hinihintay niyo!!” it said.
“Ex Ex Lovers” will be Jolina and Marvin’s first film together after more than two decades. This also marks the first movie collaboration between Cornerstone Studios and Project 8 Projects, following their previous partnership on the productions of the romantic drama series “Replacing Chef Chico” and the first and second seasons of the reality competition series “Drag Den.”
Nothing much has been revealed yet about “Ex Ex Lovers,” including its plot and release date, but it will be under the direction of filmmaker JP Habac. “MarJo” will star alongside Gen Z actors Juan Karlos Labajo and Loisa Andalio.
On Instagram, Jolina and Marvin also shared some behind-the-scenes clips of their photoshoot for their new film.
“Mga batang 90s!!!” Marvin wrote. “Finally eto na.”
“After 25 years…” Jolina, on the other hand, said.
Fans’ reactions
Meanwhile, the excitement was immediately felt across social media platforms, following the confirmation of “MarJo’s” long-awaited reunion film.
Among those thrilled about “Ex Ex Lovers” were director Antoinette Jadaone and Jolina’s “Magandang Buhay” co-host Melai Cantiveros-Francisco.
“Oh what a journey. Thank [you] for saying yes,” commented the filmmaker on Jolina’s post.
“Hayan na nga sila. Congrats [momshie] Jols and kuya Marvin,” said the comedienne.
Other fans said that “MarJo’s” reunion film was indeed worth the wait.
“25 years ago, pero nothing has changed, nakakakilig pa rin,” one fan wrote.
“You have an effect on me talaga,” another fan said. “Thank you for doing this. Ang saya ng puso ko.”
“MarJo” fans have been clamoring for Jolina and Marvin’s reunion project since 2022, after the two posted behind-the-scenes clips of their food and travel vlog in Singapore. Speculation on their comeback big-screen project surged when Jolina and Marvin reunited with directors Antoinette and Dan Villegas in June 2024.
