KOREAN stars IU and Park Bo Gum will take viewers on their journey of life and love, as they explore the four seasons in their newest Korean drama, “When Life Gives You Tangerines.”

Streaming platform Netflix released a teaser for the drama on Thursday, January 23, which featured the breathtaking beauty of Jeju Island, one of the popular destinations in South Korea.

Set in the 1950s, “When Life Gives You Tangerines” narrates the adventures of Oh Ae-sun (played by IU), known as “the remarkable rebel,” and Yang Gwan-sik (played by Bo Gum), known as the “unyielding iron,” on Jeju Island.

The one-minute and seven-second teaser opened with Ae-sun and Gwan-sik walking hand-in-hand on a canola flower field in their school uniform and tracksuit, respectively.

But love is not always rainbows and butterflies. Like any other duos, Ae-sun and Gwan-sik argue, with the former throwing her ring in front of Gwan-sik and screaming his name.

The teaser ended with Ae-sun putting a canola flower behind Gwan-sik’s ear. He then tells Ae-sun: “Still, you’re pretty.”

“When Life Gives You Tangerines” is written by Lim Sang-choon, known for her work on the award-winning K-drama “When the Camellia Blooms” in 2019. 

Kim Won-suk, whom IU had worked with in the 2018 drama “Mister,” helmed the forthcoming Korean series.

“When Life Gives You Tangerines” will premiere on Netflix on March 7, 2025.

About the actors

“When Life Gives You Tangerines” is IU’s second Netflix Original K-drama, after starring in the Netflix anthology series “Persona” in 2019.

IU, whose real name is Lee Ji-eun, headlined several hit K-dramas, including “Dream High,” “The Producers,” “Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo,” and “Hotel del Luna.”

To recall, Bo Gum had a surprise cameo in the ninth episode of “The Producers.”

Aside from being an actress, IU is a soloist known for her songs “Palette,” “BBIBBI,” “Blueming,” “eight,” “Celebrity,” “LILAC,” and “Love wins all,” among others. 

The singer-songwriter visited the Philippines in June 2024 for her “HEREH” concert at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan, which marked her first return to the country in four years after “Love, Poem.”

Meanwhile, Bo Gum is known for his roles in popular K-dramas “Reply 1988,” “Love in the Moonlight,” “Encounter,” and “Record of Youth.”

Like IU, Bo Gum is also a singer known for his songs “Let’s go see the stars,” “Dear My Friend,” and “Bloomin’.”

He last visited the Philippines in 2019 for a fan meet at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
