It’s National Aspin Day tomorrow

by Bryan Gadingan

IN THE heart of the Philippines, where lively culture and rich customs intersect in unexpected ways, National Aspin Day emerges as one of the most unusual and poignant celebrations for the beloved Filipino dogs.

This special day, held annually on August 18, is dedicated to celebrating the country’s Aspin, also known as Asong Pinoy. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) recognized 2021 as the inaugural National Aspin Day.

Furthermore, this day not only recognizes the importance of these native canine companions, but also emphasizes their vital role in Filipino society and culture, as well as promotes overall animal care.

What is it for?

Aspins are more than simply a pet in the Philippines; they represent persistence and adaptation. These dogs have been part of Filipino households for decades.

They are known for their resourcefulness, having adapted to a variety of living situations, ranging from bustling cities to secluded rural towns. Aspins represent the rich genetic background of the Philippines.

Aside from honoring their contributions to any household they reside in, it is undeniable that these dogs are frequently seen as stray dogs or unwanted pets. Nonetheless, Aspins demand the same love and care as any other dog breed.

Offering love and compassion to Aspins can have a tremendous impact on their life. Aspins, like any dog, may create strong ties with humans and return affection.

Given that the majority of Aspins live on the streets, providing them with care and attention can ease their suffering, improve their physical health, and boost their general well-being.

Head towards change

Now that National Aspin Day is just hours away, there are some simple ways to celebrate it and improve the lives of these canines on your own or with a willing and able community.

Individuals can start by donating to local animal shelters, participating in initiatives, and raising awareness about the needs of street dogs. Time, resources, and skill can have a direct impact on Aspins’ quality of life.

Promoting responsible pet ownership and encouraging people to adopt can help reduce the number of stray animals and improve living conditions for those who are currently on the street. You can adopt one yourself.

Meanwhile, adopting dogs may be an enormous responsibility, not only in terms of caring for them, but also in terms of the associated costs.

Rather than adopting one, people can share their favorite Aspin memories on social media, creating a day to remember their lives and how helpful these dogs have been to our community.

If you have an Aspin in your home and don’t have enough money, small gestures like preparing their favorite dish, giving them treats, or simply spending time with them would suffice.

There are several ways to celebrate National Aspin Day. Nonetheless, let this day serve as a reminder to everyone that these puppies are just like any other creature we care for.

As a society, we have the chance and obligation to make a positive difference in the lives of these Aspins by demonstrating that love and empathy knows no limitations, regardless of an animal’s circumstances.
