Is it time to move out?

BLOOMING into adulthood, more responsibilities start to come our way. We begin to worry about the bills we’ll have to pay, things that we have to manage, and the work that we ought to accomplish.

Entering adulthood, one of the things that crosses our minds is the idea of having to live independently in our own spaces with our money and all by ourselves.

Having to decide when to move out of your current house is one of the significant milestones in everyone’s life but the thought of it comes with many considerations, grappling with the pressures of being one responsible adult.

“Is it time to move out?” A question that is so easy to ask yet difficult to answer as having to answer it requires more than responding to the question whether you’re ready for it or not.

The decision to move out involves more than just finding a nice place to live as having to consider taking on this milestone is about taking on new responsibilities, and finances, and having to create a lifestyle that lines up with your evolving goals.

But before we come up with a decision upon taking this milestone, we should first ask ourselves these questions:

Are you responsible enough?

Living alone requires more than cleaning and looking out for yourself. Now that you’ve decided to move out–there are more responsibilities that you should look out for such as attaining your monthly bills, household maintenance, and weekly/monthly groceries.

The responsibility of living on your own stems from being financially responsible. There is no such thing as free products or labor you can get anywhere and to keep up with your finances, creating a weekly budget plan should become a must.

Moving out can be expensive, and having a realistic budget considering all costs (including moving trucks and cleaning supplies) should be essential and so is having your emergency funds.

Aside from being financially responsible, one of the things that we should consider is whether or not we can look after ourselves.

Growing up, we’ve been taught chores and basic self-care needs so that we’ll be able to look after ourselves without the supervision of our elders and while this is something that we’ve come to master by now–as adults, having to look after yourself comes more than just basic chores and hygienes.

Are you ready?

Having to move out requires more than just being responsible or being overall able to take care of yourself. Having to leave the place that you once called home can also be just as emotionally challenging as it is, especially when you’re parting ways with your loved ones.

Being ready to move out goes beyond just having enough money to live on your own as having to know whether you’re ready or not involves emotional maturity and practical preparedness.

Living on your own doesn’t mean that you’re cutting ties with your loved ones so it’s better to keep in touch with them from time to time.

Staying on the topic of managing relationships, and drawing boundaries to protect your space, time, and emotional well-being is something that you should also be ready to build for yourself and remind yourself that it was never selfish to want something peaceful.

Don’t be afraid of change

Hopping into a new milestone comes with a lot of changes and moving out from the place you once called home takes a huge step from your comfort zone into the unknown.

Change can be scary but this shouldn’t stop you from embracing the new things.

It is okay to feel scared when you’re faced with a big chance, leaving things that were once familiar to you and stepping into something new can stir up feelings of anxiety. Nevertheless, instead of suppressing what we feel about this, be open to accepting this and see it as a stepping stone on your growth.
