PHILIPPINE Pop, simply known as P-pop, has been making waves in the local music scene with the rise to fame of groups like SB19 and BINI. 

P-pop as a genre has been catching and breaking the hearts of many listeners with its great lyricism and refreshing vibe.

Many songs are often inspired by an experience, a memory, or even a particular emotion that inspired many P-pop groups to write these musical masterpieces that we enjoy today. 

With the film “Inside Out 2” hitting the Philippine cinemas on June 12, here are some P-pop songs that best represent the emotions from the film: 

Anxiety as Karera by BINI

Anxiety may be generally referred to as the feeling of fear and uneasiness when confronted by a stressful or threatening event. 

Not knowing what to do, being unsure of which route to take, and overthinking everything in your life are common signs of anxiety a person may experience. 

Such signs are perfectly captured in the song “Karera” by P-pop’s nation girl group BINI with the lyrics: Minsan ay nahuhuli ang sarili na nag-aalala. Mga bagay na ‘di kontrolado pinoproblema.

Although the song inspires people who feel like they are being left behind not to treat life as a competition, Karera is still a song that captures the feeling of being anxious. 

Sadness as Hanggang sa Huli by SB19 

Sadness can be found anywhere in different forms. 

It could be a child crying after getting a wound from playing, a student failing an exam, a grown-up person reminiscing the nostalgic memories of childhood, or a girl letting her tears drop silently after breaking up with her partner. 

For the P-pop kings SB19, sadness can also mean accepting that you can never get the ‘love’ that you want sometimes. 

It is very apparent in the lyrics of “Hanggang sa Huli:” 

Siguro nga’y nararapat lang ika’y limutin na / Pag-ibig ko’y isang hangin na ‘di mo madarama (‘di mo madarama)

The song proves that you can still love someone despite not being loved back. But while accepting the situation of unrequited love may have a liberating feeling, no one could ever deny the sadness attached to it. 

Indeed, to love is to suffer: ‘Di man ako para sa ‘yo, puso’y ‘di magbabago. 

Embarrassment as Hey Love! by Press Hit Play 

Many of us definitely have some embarrassing moments in life, especially during our childhood days. 

But there is no denying as well that falling in love compels many of us to do embarrassing things in hopes of being noticed by our crush. 

The experience of being shy when confessing your love to someone is what “Hey Love!” by Press Hit Play is all about. 

I’m holding back my feelings when you’re here by my side / Ilang sabihin kahit na goodnight!

A piece of advice: confess now even if you are embarrassed! 

The way you look at me bigla kong na-realize / No reason for these feelings to hide.

Joy as Pantropiko by BINI

If happiness is a song, it would definitely be “Pantropiko” by BINI.  

It’s undeniable that Pantropiko has become everyone’s unofficial summer song and guilty pleasure. You simply cannot help but dance and sing along to this hit as Joy would, too!

As the lyrics said, Bawat araw mas sumasaya magmula nang nakita ka. Nawawala ang pangangamba pag ika’y kapiling na.

Envy as One Sided Love by G22

Who hasn’t hoped to be chosen and loved back at some point?

G22 described Envy best with their song “One Sided Love:” 

Sa tuwing kinakausap ka, parang patay. Kasi ang isip mo kasama siyang naglalakbay.

While the song can also describe the sadness of unrequited love, it could also represent envy, exuding the “that should be me” energy in the lyrics. 

Being envious does not necessarily mean a negative emotion, it is just you wishing to receive the admiration and validation you think you deserve. 

Anger as SSP by VXON 

Like sadness, anger can also manifest in many ways. It never leaves us, no matter how old or mature we are. 

But getting angry does not always make you bad, it is also a way to humanize your feelings and liberate yourself from bad experiences. 

Some anger is warranted, especially the kind that’s a result of betrayal by someone you trusted. VXON captured this feeling best with their lyrics:

Saksakan ng sama / Nagkamaling akala / ‘Di na pala tayo nagtugma / Saksakan ng kapal / Ako’y napaniwala / Dadalawa pala ang ‘yong mukha.

To feel angry is okay, but you might need to be more responsible when doing something out of anger. 

Inside Out 2

“Inside Out 2” is an upcoming film that serves as a sequel to the award-winning animated film, “Inside Out (2015).” 

The sequel was first announced in 2022 with Kelsey Mann and Meg LeFuave reprising the role as the director and writer of the film, respectively. 

The film follows the life of teenager Riley and her emotions—Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Anger, and Fear—as they navigate life after being joined by new emotions that want to take over Riley’s head.
