IKEA hires real people to work on Roblox virtual shop

by Deanna Macaranas

FROM what was known as a game for kids can now be a real job opportunity. The best part? As long as you’re at least 18 years old, they aren’t going to pay you with Robux but with real money!

On June 24, IKEA is set to have their own virtual store in online gaming platform Roblox.

Under the initiative blend of real-world and virtual employment, “The Co-Worker Game” is open to applicants 18 years old and above.

In their press release, IKEA said “The Co-Worker Game” will allow players to virtually experience what’s it like to work in the furniture chain.

Those who get hired will experience getting promoted to new departments and will be given exciting opportunities to work in different parts of the store, such as having to serve IKEA’s Swedish meatballs.

IKEA said that players will be able to “live their home furnishing dream” as well as get paid for it.

By having to work in the virtual store, players can earn £13.15 ($16.79) per hour just by being at home while enjoying the pleasure of playing Roblox. However, only residents of UK or Ireland are eligible to apply until June 16 only.

The recruitment process includes sending updated CVs and answering questions such as, “If you were a pixelated Ikea furniture, what would you be?” and “What would you do if we ran out of pixelated hot dogs in our bistro?”

Only 10 candidates will be selected for the jobs. The successful candidates will be invited to a virtual interview.

Chosen candidates will start working on June 24 and will be designated to different areas of the store such as the Bistro, Showroom, assisting virtual customers, in choosing furniture and other task, and serving meatballs.

While having to work in a virtual space might seem like an odd idea, virtual store employees might earn more than IKEA’s real-world employees.

In the US, IKEA’s minimum wage varies from $16-$18 per hour, whereas in the UK, it is at £10.90 and London’s rate is at £11.95.

The new job opportunity was talked about amongst netizens, with many of them making hilarious tweets on X (formerly Twitter).

Some netizens even shared that they tried to apply for the job.
