The sequel to the science-novel-based movie Dune will be released next year, following the strike of the Writers Guild Of America (WGA), the Screen Actors Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).
What is Dune?
Dune is a science fiction novel written by American author Frank Herbert in 1965. In 2003, the novel was described as the world’s best-selling science fiction novel. A 2021 adaptation began filming in March 2019, starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. Dune was set in Budapest, Hungary, and Jordan.
Dune’s international release was on September 15, 2021. It was originally scheduled to premiere in late 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It became a box office success, earning $402 million on a $165 million budget
In October 2021, Dune’s director, Denis Villeneuve, announced the upcoming sequel. The highly anticipated sequel was originally set for release in October 2023 but was later moved to November 2023.
On August 24, it was announced that the sequel would be released in March 2024 amid the writers and actors strike.
Strike
The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes were due to failed negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and TV Producers as they fought for better pay.
Due to the strike, various movies, TV series, and production releases have been delayed. Warner Bros. had also delayed the release of “Godzilla x Kong” until March 2024. This also includes New Line’s “Lord of The Ring” release, moved from April to December of 2024. Despite having Dune: Part Two’s release moved, Warner Bros. movies such as “Aquaman 2”, “Wonka”, and “The Lost Kingdom” stayed put and will come out in December 2023.
Reactions
Some couldn’t help but share their dismay regarding the delay.
