Here’s what went down during EXO’s Chanyeol’s ‘City-scape’ in Manila

by Joanna Deala

K-POP star Chanyeol of boy group EXO unlocked another core memory with Filo EXO-Ls during the Manila leg of his solo concert, treating them to many performances including a cover of a Filipino song.

The 31-year-old rapper was in the Philippines for his “City-scape” tour held at the Araneta Coliseum on Saturday, October 19. The event came almost a year after his last fan meeting in the country, organized by a local clothing brand.

Thousands of Filipino fans warmly welcomed their favorite idol, and in return, Chanyeol made sure to make their Saturday night one for the books.

Here are several highlights of his “City-scape” concert in Manila that made rounds on social media:

‘Raining in Manila’ cover

Chanyeol showed his love for his Filipino fans when he performed “Raining in Manila” by Filipino rock band Lola Amour not only once but twice!

He showcased his rendition of “Raining in Manila” with a live band, singing from the intro part to the second verse of the song.

But Filo EXO-Ls could not seem to get enough of his rendition and requested him to sing it again. Loud cheers erupted at the venue when Chanyeol gladly granted their wish and asked fans to sing along with him.

Lola Amour released “Raining in Manila” last year and has received international traction. The song speaks about missing a person who has left, while also assuring them that there will be someone or something waiting for them if ever they return.

Guitar medley

Known for his guitar skills, Chanyeol also performed a guitar medley of the songs “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses, “Hotel California” by Eagles, and “Basket Case” by Green Day.

In a clip shared by a netizen on X (formerly Twitter), the rapper said he was “nervous” about his guitar performance but left Filo EXO-Ls in awe as soon as he strummed his electric guitar to play the 80s hit song “Sweet Child O’ Mine.”

He continued to wow the fans with his riffs and runs in “Hotel California” and rocked the stage with “Basket Case,” while fans sang with him.

‘Stay With Me’ performance

The night became nostalgic when Chanyeol performed “Stay With Me,” the hit original soundtrack (OST) of the 2016 South Korean drama “Guardian: The Lonely and Great God,” locally known as “Goblin.”

Originally a duet with South Korean singer Punch, Chanyeol sang the OST featuring Filo EXO-Ls during the concert.

A video on X showed EXO-Ls singing the song’s chorus part. Chanyeol, on the other hand, stood out with his rap verses in the hit OST, eliciting screams from the audience.

EXO medley

In addition to his surprises, Chanyeol performed several hit songs by his group EXO that hyped the crowd.

Among the songs were “Lotto,” “Tempo,” “Monster,” “Obsession,” “Growl,” and their latest song “Hear Me Out.”

“Hear Me Out” is part of EXO’s seventh studio album “EXIST,” released in July 2023.

Fan project

Of course, the concert would not end without a gift from Filo EXO-Ls.

The fans prepared a fan project for Chanyeol where they sang his 2021 song “Tomorrow.”

They also prepared a four-leaf clover banner, with “Tomorrow’s” lyrics printed on its back. Chanyeol poked fun at how Filo EXO-Ls sang the song as he read the Romanized lyrics on the banner.

Following the concert, Chanyeol posted a photo of him on X and said, “Mahal Kita.”
