Grammys, to move from CBS to Disney in 2027

by Gaby Agbulos

DISNEY, your time is now.

The popular television channel CBS has been streaming The Grammys since 1973, shortly taking over after ABC following a two-year stint.

They have since been working with CBS for the past 54 years, but have recently made the decision to move to being broadcasted on Disney’s networks and streaming services starting in 2027, as per Disney Entertainment Co-Chairman Dana Walden and Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr.

The two have a 10-year global deal, which will see an annual music ceremony simulcast on ABC, Disney+, and Hulu up until 2036.

“Live events have never been more important to our culture and industry, and we just acquired one of the crown jewels, adding to our portfolio of world-class programming across all genres,” said Walden in a press statement.

“As The Walt Disney Company combines forces with The Recording Academy to open this exciting new chapter in the history of The Grammys, we do so with pride and gratitude. Live events have never been more important to our culture and industry, and we just acquired one of the crown jewels, adding to our portfolio of world-class programming across all genres.”

At present, Disney/ABC will now be airing not just The Grammys by 2027, but The Oscars and the Super Bowl as well, which serve as some of the most famous televised events of all time.

Transformation into media giant

While in the past, Disney was only known for making children’s films full of magic and whimsy, the company has now become one of the largest media conglomerates in the world.

As per the news site Reuters, what was once just a couple of guys making films in a garage has, over the years, turned into a USD 156 million behemoth complete with theme parks, television networks, film, and streaming services, which are able to reach millions of people from all over the world.

Disney has long since proven that it has come a long way, particularly with the launch of its streaming platform, Disney+, back in 2019. By the end of its first day, over ten million people had subscribed, gaining access to multiple films and television shows owned by Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, as well as Star.

Aside from the aforementioned events, Disney’s live event portfolio will also include the annual New Year’s Rockin’ Eve special, the CMA Awards, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, the NBA Finals, and even the College Football Playoff, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

Though it may still be a ways away, it’s already clear to see that 2027 is going to be Disney’s year.
