Google to utilize AI-generated answers in search results

by RepublicAsia

Google said on Tuesday that they will introduce AI-generated answers to online queries, one of the biggest changes in the world that has led search engines for 25 years.

Google chief executive Sundar Pichai said that they are excited to launch “AI overviews,” in the US this week which will create a new experience.

He also added that this change will soon be spread to other countries, making it more accessible to more than a billion people.

The search result will feature an AI summary which will appear at the top of the page before the typical unfolding of links.

Google’s Gemini technology will produce AI blurbs that are brief summaries of content it finds online, along with links to the original online sources.

“You can ask whatever’s on your mind or whatever you need to get done – from researching to planning to brainstorming – and Google will take care of the legwork,” said Google Search team boss Liz Reid.

Additionally, Google will launch a text-to-video AI model called “Veo,” that allows the creation of computer-generated footage based only on written prompts.

Google also revealed a new AI assistant “Project Astra,” a voice tool that is dedicated for building digital assistants to aid with big or small tasks.

“For a long time we wanted to build a universal AI agent that can be truly helpful in everyday life,” said Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis.

The tool can be used also to verbally identify locations using a smartphone’s camera, read and explain computer code, and create alliterative sentences.

This change comes as Google feels a growing pressure from AI-powered search engines like Perplexity, and the creator of ChatGPT will build its own AI search tool.
