SEEKING to shorten the usual four-year college education, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian calls on the 20th Congress to make it three years.
In a press conference, Gatchalian stated that he filed a bill that shortens the four-year college education to three years.
“Unang una, finile ko yung tawag namin three-year college education. So, babawasan natin yung college education from four years to three years,” Gatchalian said.
Gatchalian further explained that the bill is set to bring general education subjects into senior high school so that college students can shift their focus to subjects that are related to their course.
The three-year college education had been a custom in Commonwealth countries such as Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
He also added on how the K-12 curriculum is now a basic education that is being used all over the world, as well as the three-year college education.
Last June, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reported that the K-12 curriculum wasn’t able to provide the necessary skills to students and has instead given an economic burden to Filipino families.
He later expressed his frustration towards it, stating that there’s not much advantage. “Wala naman naging advantage, hindi rin nakukuha sa trabaho,” he said in an interview with News 5.
This school year, most schools opened on June 16, and more than 800 schools were part of the pilot run of the revised SHS curriculum, which had only reduced core subjects from 15 to 5 that will be taught in two semesters.
Gatchalian’s proposed revision for the three-year college education will be implemented in both public and private college institutions.
