COFFEE has always been a staple in morning routines, often paired with pancakes, bread, or other breakfast favorites, making it the perfect drink to kickstart your day.
According to the statistics of Drive Research, over 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed in the world daily. 18 percent of the population prefers black coffee, 44 percent like their coffees with sweeteners, and 77 percent people add milk or creamer to their coffees.
For adults, you’ll never go wrong with a hot sip of black coffee. It will always be classic and timeless, offering a simplicity that appeals to those who appreciate a straightforward drink. Whether it’s for the burst of energy or the nostalgia of a long-held routine, black coffee remains the usual for many generations
But Gen Z’s fascination with coffee introduced bold, fun, and contemporary flavors, reflecting their diverse personalities. Not only a new taste has been welcomed, but a change in routine was also traced among Gen Z coffee drinkers, some of whom republicasia had an exclusive interview with.
James Cabile, 22, is fond of buying his everyday coffee at Starbucks out of convenience. He usually takes his daily dose of caffeine when going to school and work.
Even at a young age, James had already adopted a workaholic personality brought on by environmental pressure and his adapted lifestyle when he started his internship. Seeing what the real world was like, coffee has become a part of that journey and every milestone he has achieved.
“Since I am currently working two jobs and freelancing on the side, I feel like coffee is essential for me to keep me boosted every day and magising, for me to deliver all the tasks on time,” he shared.
His preference for coffee is very much similar to how James presents himself. Just like how he likes his coffee strong with a hint of sweetness, he presents a bold mindset toward his goal, yet possesses a cheerful personality among his peers and workmates.
Another hustling girlie, Erika Nicdao, 22, is more of a night coffee drinker. When she is out for school, work, or with peers, she visits cafes on purpose and also makes her own coffee at home. Her go-to drinks are lattes in Sea Salt, Sea Salt Caramel, and Spanish.
Erika is also an espresso drinker which resonated with her working student life as she builds a tight relationship with caffeine.
“Before, I really drink coffee because lagi akong nagpupuyat and I feel sleepy pag nag-aaral. But now, it just really became a habit where I feel like I cannot function well without it. Maybe it’s just in my mind pero may mga times talaga na feel ko hindi gumagana utak ko pag walang iniinom na kape,” she said.
Being a girl boss who provides herself leisures, her coffee tastes are black, strong, and the breve type; sweetness is not much on her palette. She also sees her caffeine choices as an expression of her hard work and productivity.
“I think my coffee routine reflects my personality in a way that it helps me be productive every single day. ‘Yung fact na I always drink coffee kasi I know na it will energize me shows kung gaano ko kagustong masulit ‘yung kada-araw para gumawa ng mga makabuluhang bagay,” she said.
While most Gen Zs associate their coffee routine with school and other activities, Annica Santos, 23, seeks a cup of coffee mainly to satisfy her cravings. Given her introverted personality, she likes to visit coffee shops with a peaceful ambience with her default order of Spanish latte.
Despite her having a go-to coffee, Annica is adventurous trying new flavors in cafes she just visited for the first time— and that’s how she discovers her favorites in each shop she frequents.
When it comes to her coffee taste, she likes it “creamy with just the right amount of sweetness, and not too strong.” Texture wise, she often looks for a thick or frothy drink.
Unlike some Gen Zs, Annica’s coffee routine is much more spontaneous. She drinks an average of two to four times a week, depending on her mood.
“I don’t think coffee affects my life on a deeper level. I consume it kasi hinahanap lang ng taste buds ko yung lasa. I can still function naman without it but it helps para gisingin ‘yung diwa ko,” she said.
Gen Zs love to drink coffee for many reasons, it could be to hang out with friends, an energy boost, or simply because you enjoy a cup of it. Coffee, being the second most consumed beverage next to water, could be one reason Gen Zs explore its diverse tastes.
