Films to watch this coming Halloween

by Gaby Agbulos

WITH Halloween just around the corner, people are already making plans for what they’re going to do when the holiday comes around. And one thing you can’t not do during Halloween is watch a scary movie.

Watching horror movies – whether it be alone, with your friends, or with your family – is always a fun feat: eating junk food in the dark and screaming at the top of your lungs with each jumpscare that comes on screen all make for core memories that you’ll hold with you forever.

To prepare for your upcoming movie night, here are some films that’ll be releasing this October, ones that you can watch at home or on the big screen.

  1. Salem’s Lot

“He’s not just a killer, is he?”

“No. He’s a monster.”

Based on beloved author Stephen King’s novel of the same name, “Salem’s Lot” is directed and written by Gary Dauberman, who has also worked on films like “Annabelle”, “The Nun”, and “It Chapter Two”.

The story revolves around a writer named Ben Mears, who goes to visit his childhood home, “Jerusalem’s Lot” in Maine. When he gets home, however, he realizes that the town has become overrun with bloodthirsty vampires.

To save his home, Mark has to form a team to defeat the vampires and send them back to where they came from, so that the people of the town can live peacefully once and for all.

The film had its world premiere at the Beyond Fest back in September 2024, and will be available for viewing on Max by October 3rd this year.

  1. It’s What’s Inside

“If you think of your brain as a hard drive, then this just transfers the files.”

Written and directed by Greg Jardin, “It’s What’s Inside” is a comedy horror film that follows a group of friends who have come together for a pre-wedding celebration.

Suddenly, however, a surprise guest named Forbes arrives at the party, bringing with him a mysterious suitcase.

He asks the group if they want to play a game, and the group agrees, unbeknownst to them that this would change their lives forever – and not in a good way.

Originally premiering at the Sundance Film Festival back in January, the film will be available on Netflix on October 4.

  1. Terrifier 3

“We both know this isn’t over.”

Serving as the third installment to the “Terrifier” franchise, writer and director Damien Leone is back to bring Art the Clown back to life.

“Terrifier 3” is one of the most anticipated upcoming horror movies to date. The third film in the series will follow a young girl named Sienna, who is on a quest for revenge against Art. When he visits a small, unfortunate town on Christmas Eve, he wastes no time killing and slashing to his heart’s delight.

His main goal? To find Sienna and her brother, two of the few who were able to escape his wrath.

Terrifier 3 originally premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas back in September. This film will be released on October 11.

Hailed by many as one of the most gruesome slasher films up to date, be sure that you’re going into the theatre with an empty stomach and nerves of steel.

  1. Smile 2

“You’re not in control. I am.”

Serving as a sequel to the popular film “Smile”, the second installment of the franchise follows pop sensation Skye Riley who, after visiting an old buddy from high school, starts having horrifying visions.

Much like in the original film, she is followed around by an entity who comes in the form of various smiling people, who often leads people to kill themselves.

As she embarks on her world tour, at the height of her career, her dark past and this invisible entity start to follow her. Will she gain control over all of it? Or will she succumb to this sinister evil, allowing it to take over her entirely?

These are the questions to be asked when you watch writer and director Parker Finn’s latest film, “Smile 2”, which is scheduled for release on October 18.

  1. Your Monster

“Something really weird is happening at home.”

Scream queen Melissa Barrera is back with “Your Monster”, a romantic-comedy-horror film revolving around a girl named Laura Franco.

While dealing with a painful break-up and a life-changing diagnosis, Laura suddenly finds a terrifying monster living in her home. While their relationship starts out rather rocky, Laura slowly starts to grow closer with the Monster, and soon enough they become friends… or perhaps even more.

This film from director Caroline Lindy is a great film to watch if you’re a hopeless romantic or if you’re looking for something a little lighter to watch this coming Halloween.

It premiers in theatres on October 25, only a few days shy of Halloween.
