Eldrew Yulo bags 7 gold medals in Batang Pinoy gymnastics

by Bryan Gadingan

TALK about making an entrance.

Karl Eldrew Yulo made an immediate impact in the individual events of men’s artistic gymnastics on Wednesday, as he achieved a rare seven-gold sweep.

The 15-year-old brother of Carlos Yulo, the country’s Olympian gymnast, is starting to build his own reputation after a strong performance in the Batang Pinoy national finals.

The younger Yulo, who represents the city of Manila, was exceptional. He was unbeatable in the boys’ FIG Juniors 14-17 division, winning all individual events.

Vault, still rings, floor exercise, high bar, parallel bar, pommel horse, and excelling in individual all-around events were among the activities staged at the GAP Gym in Intramuros, Manila.

Eldrew can win his eighth gold medal pending the official results of the team event, which are subject to review by the technical committee.

He is being groomed to be the next big thing in gymnastics after his older brother Carlos, who won gold in the floor exercise at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, and gold in the vault exercise at the 2021 World Championships in Japan.

Their grandfather Rodrigo Frisco, who is credited with introducing the sport to Carlos, said Eldrew could outperform his brother when their talents are compared.

Mas magaling ito (Eldrew) kesa sa kanyang kuya,” noted Frisco.

Yulo could possibly compete in the seniors’ event at the Philippine National Games, which begin on Thursday.

Given the opportunity to fight against more experienced athletes, Eldrew Yulo may be the next emerging star in the gymnastics world.
