Don’t walk, run to the “brat” wall in Quezon City

by Gaby Agbulos

TO ALL the Charli XCX fans out there, the iconic brat wall has been spotted in Quezon City.

The brat wall, made popular by artist Charli XCX, was a manner of promotion for her latest album, “brat”. Aside from this, songs from her album like “360” and “apple” were all over social media, and this summer had officially been labeled “brat girl summer.”

Following its release, the album debuted at number two on the UK Albums Chart and was a part of the top ten in 12 other countries. It’s also been labeled by Metacritic as the highest-rated album of 2024 thus far.

It grew to become so popular that it was even used by Vice President Kamala Harris in her 2024 presidential campaign, following Charli tweeting a show of support for the candidate that read: “kamala IS brat.”

Part of the months-long promotional campaign for this album was the ever-so-iconic “brat wall.” As is in the name, a wall of a climbing gym in Williamsburg had been painted a bright lime green. In the middle was the singular word, “brat”.

This new era of Charli was first teased when she did a live performance of “360” on top of an SUV parked in front of The Lot Radio, which featured the brat wall in the background (as well as thousands of adoring fans.)

Two months later, fans were sad to see the brat wall go after it had been repainted to say “okay, bye!”

Many assumed that this meant that it was the end of the brat summer era. On X (formerly Twitter), however, Charli reassured fans that this was just the end of the wall, and not brat girl summer.

Despite the end of the brat wall in New York, though, many iterations have since been popping up in parts of the Philippines. Whether this is the work of Charli’s fans or her management has yet to be confirmed.

brat wall in the Philippines

Recently, a tweet from X user @rhirethdl showed a picture of the brat wall, located in Tomas Morato Avenue, Cor. Scout Bayoran.

Just a few days prior, one was spotted in Sta. Mesa, as well.

To better track these brat wall sightings, one fan made a Google Maps list compiling the places they’d been spotted at. So far, the locations are as follows:

  • G. Tuazon, Sampaloc, in front of Super Daddy’s Milk Tea
  • 4345 Old Sta. Mesa Street, near Bobot’s Sari-Sari Store
  • Tomas Morato Avenue, Cor. Scout Bayoran, near ABS-CBN tower

With regard to these walls suddenly popping up, one user asked: “Why would a brat wall appear in QC and Sta. Mesa when the album released a few months ago… unless there’s a tour coming?”

At present, it’s unknown as to what these brat walls may represent – whether they truly are hints to a future tour or are simply a fan project made for Filipinos to experience the brat wall IRL – there’s no harm in passing by to take a selfie or two for that brat girl summer slay.

Hell, maybe even strike a Pose 28 while doing it! Long live brat girl summer!
