EMPLOYEES who will report for duty during the declared holiday for the observance of Eid’l Adha on Monday, June 17, will be paid double, according to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

As stipulated in Labor Advisory 8, series of 2024, signed by DOLE Undersecretary Carmela Torres, certain pay rules shall apply to both the working and non-working employees of the regular holiday.

The following computations employers shall abide to for those who will work during the holiday are as follows:

“For work done during the regular holiday, the employer shall pay a total of 200% of the employee’s wage for that day for the first eight hours (Basic wage x 200%).”

Additionally, those who will exceed eight hours of work shall be given an “additional 30% of the hourly rate on said day (Hourly rate of the basic wage x 200% x 130% x number of hours worked).”

Meanwhile, for employees who will choose to work during the national holiday, which also happens to be their rest day, shall be paid an “additional 30% of the basic wage of 200% (Basic wage x 200% x 130%).”

The extra hours of work past the first eight hours the employees shall complete will be credited with an “additional 30% of the hourly rate on said day (Hourly rate of the basic wage x 200% x 130% x number of hours worked.)”

For employees who will not work during the holiday, they will still be paid 100% of their wage for that day, as long as they have reported to work or were on leave of absence with pay the day before the regular holiday.

“Where the day immediately preceding the regular holiday is a non-working day in the establishment or the scheduled rest day of the employee, he or she shall be entitled to holiday pay if the employee reports to work or is on leave of absence with pay on the day immediately preceding the non-working day or rest day (Basic wage x 100%),” DOLE added.

June 17 was declared as a national holiday by Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. via Proclamation 579 gave way to the Eid’l Adha or Feast of Sacrifice, one of the two main religious celebrations (the other being Eid’l Fitr) in the Islamic calendar.

Eid’l Adha comes about two months after Eid’l Fitr or the day that marks the end of Muslims’ monthlong Ramadan or fasting. It is a day that honors Prophet Ibrahim’s (known as Abraham in Christianity and Judaism) sacrifice of his son Ismail as a sign of obedience to Allah.

Traditionally, Muslims would enact a similar sacrificial act by offering the meat of the livestock animals they bought such as goats, sheep, and cows, among others, to the needy, their family, friends, and neighbors.
