DOH encourages vloggers to use “Pinggang Pinoy” guide instead of unhealthy mukbang

by Deanna Macaranas

THE Department of Health (DOH) is asking food vloggers to create more healthy content by encouraging them to promote healthy eating instead of “mukbangs.”

The government department encouraged content creators to reach out to their viewers with a healthy eating habit by using the “Pinggang Pinoy ” as a guide when creating videos.

DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo stated on how important it is to promote a healthy diet especially in the month of Nutrition month.

Domingo proceeded to talk about how they can use ‘Pinggang Pinoy’ as a guide to promote a healthy eating habit as they speak to their followers.

Pinggang Pinoy

‘Pinggang Pinoy,’ refers to ‘go, grow, and glow,’ foods. It also includes food portions that are appropriate for people’s age.

“Go” foods refers to foods packed with carbohydrates such ash bread, rice, pasta, or oats, while “Grow” foods refers to foods with high proteins such as  meat, fish, eggs, and dairy.

“Glow” foods refers to fruits and vegetables.

Domingo said that the trend, which began in South Korea, showed content creators binge a massive portion of food while engaging with their viewers. This trend is referred to as “mukbang,” and has since taken place online especially when vloggers in the Philippines began publishing content about it.

Just recently, a news story blew up on where DOH began thinking about banning the said trend.

The decision for the mukbang ban was caused by the death of a vlogger who died from a stroke last June 14.

The vlogger’s cause of death is suspected to be due to mukbang where he created a content of himself–eating fried chicken.

In mukbang, content creators usually just feature one type of food that creators consume a massive amount of.

According to DOH, in order to balance it out, one should consume “one-half of carbohydrate-rich food, one-fourth of food rich in protein and the other one-fourth portion should consist of fruits and vegetables.”

Due to its bad effect, DOH is still thinking if mukbang videos should be banned or not.
