by Joanna Deala

RISING Filipina R&B sensation Denise Julia is definitely on fire this year as she continues to make waves in the local music scene, after her song “B.A.D.” becomes the highest-charting OPM song on Apple Music PH.

This was announced by Chart Data PH on X (formerly Twitter) on Christmas Day, December 25.

“B.A.D.” has surpassed Juan Karlos Labajo’s hit song “ERE,” it added.

The Gen Z singer-songwriter reacted to the post and said, “MERRY CHRISTMAS.”

Denise Julia, also known as “DJ” to her fans, dropped the official video for “B.A.D.” on October 28. It starred drag artist and “Drag Race Philippines” first runner-up Marina Summers.

The 21-year-old singer previously trended on X after Giselle of fourth generation K-pop girl group Aespa shared “B.A.D.” on her Instagram story last month.

Denise Julia, a fan of Aespa, was over the moon as she reacted to the Instagram story: “GISELLE FROM AESPA LISTENING TO MY SONG WTAF. SHE’S LITERALLY MY BIAS….I JUST STARTED STANNING AESPA LIKE A WEEK AGO WTFAHSNEBSNDNJFFKFJ.”

She continued to live every K-pop fan dream when Giselle jumped in on the viral “B.A.D.” dance challenge on TikTok.

Denise Julia commented on the clip and said, “GISELLE PWEASE.” An admin of Aespa’s official TikTok account replied to this with a heart-on-fire emoji.

‘Sweet Nothings (Chapter 1)’

The hit R&B track featuring Filipino-American rapper P-Lo was first released in October before it became part of Denise Julia’s debut album “Sweet Nothings (Chapter 1),” which she dropped in November under Sony Music Entertainment.

The album also includes five other tracks: “Lackin’,” “Sugar n’ Spice,” “bum 2 me (feat. Jason Dhakal),” “Roster (feat. HILLARI),” and “butterflies (2 a.m. version).”

In an Instagram post, Denise Julia shared that her latest album was a “reflection” of her own experiences and heart-touching stories of other individuals.

“It is a musical journey that unravels the complexities of love, each track revealing a different side of this powerful emotion. From the heartwarming beginnings of love’s bloom to the intoxications of a situationship, the lack of certainty in relationships to commitment, the heart-wrenching breakup to healing, and much, much more,” she said.

The album is not solely about love but also shows the authentic self of the Filipina singer.

“‘Sweet Nothings’ is a celebration of my identity, a testament to the artist I aspire to be, and a narrative that I am eager to share with all of you,” she emphasized.

“It’s a collection of moments, emotions, and stories that have shaped me into the person I am today,” she said.

It was also through her debut album that she paid homage to the 1990s and 2000s R&B era which, she said, “shaped my musical upbringing.”

About Denise Julia

The singer-songwriter gained popularity across social media platforms with her singles “NVMD” in 2022 and “Pity Ya” in 2021.

She has collaborated with other artists like Steve Hansen for “High on Me,” Milky Day for “Let Me,” and Michael Pacquiao for “Body Right.”

Perhaps with her relatable songs dwelling on the complexities of love, Denise Julia has earned the moniker “Patron Saint of Situationship” from her fans, especially the young ones.

“Situationship” is a Gen Z term where people are involved in a casual, commitment-free relationship.

The Gen Z singer continues to cement her name in the music industry when she garnered over four million streams on Spotify, making her the Filipino female artist with the most monthly listeners on the digital music service, according to Chart Data PH on December 19.
