BINONDO, home to Manila’s Chinatown, is one of the country’s cultural and historical intersections. Many people, and even visitors, are drawn to the rich tapestry of food available.

Some patterns fade over time, while others remain dominant on a daily basis. One timeless trend is the year-round cuisine trip experience that awaits you in Binondo.

The Binondo Specials

Given the buzz around it, you’ve undoubtedly seen this list on your social network. However, it is irresistibly good to revisit some of Binondo’s most indulgent menu items.

Offering a variety of delectable delicacies to commemorate the CNY mood, ranging from savory appetizers to sweet desserts, here are some of the best foods to enjoy as we celebrate the Year of the Wood Snake.

Fried Siopao

Siopao, or steamed buns, are a staple in Filipino-Chinese cuisine, but the Shanghai Fried Siopao elevates this favorite snack to new heights.

Unlike its traditional fried version, the Fried Siopao has a golden and crispy crust that provides a delicious crunch on the exterior while maintaining a soft, flavorful filling on the inside.

Typically made with ground pork, Chinese sausage, and a variety of spices, this version adds a twist with its crispy texture, making it an ideal snack to enjoy while strolling through Binondo’s bustling streets.

Kutchay Dumplings

Dong Bei Dumplings has quickly become a fan favorite, thanks to its tasty fillings and perfectly constructed dough. These dumplings are a delicious alternative to the more usual dumplings seen in Chinese restaurants.

The dumplings are made with a thin yet chewy dough and filled with a range of tasty meats, including pork, beef, chicken, and veggies.

What distinguishes these is their intense flavor, particularly when dipped in soy sauce, chile oil, and black vinegar. Whether you like them steamed, boiled, or fried, Dong Bei Dumplings has mastered the art of this cuisine.

Egg Tart

Lord’s Stow Bakery in Binondo is famous for its egg tart, which has won the hearts of many people for years. The egg tarts are prepared to perfection, with a golden, flaky exterior that leads to a thick, creamy custard filling.

Each bite has the ideal balance of sweetness and texture, making it an irresistible treat and an especially appropriate dessert for the CNY festivities.

Whether you’re eating one as a snack or bringing a box home to share with family and friends, Lord’s Stow’s egg tarts are a standout among Binondo’s sweet offerings at any time of year.

New Po Heng’s version of fresh lumpia, served on a chewy wrapper with sautéed vegetables and a sweet, savory peanut sauce, is a popular dish in Binondo.

The combination of fresh ingredients and the rich sauce creates a light yet satisfying dish that’s perfect for a mid-day snack or appetizer.

During CNY, fresh lumpia is especially meaningful as it represents good health and longevity. Something that most of us are manifesting when new year comes.

Hopia and Tikoy

A trip to Binondo wouldn’t be complete without buying Hopia and Tikoy, two of the most iconic Chinese snacks enjoyed by Filipinos. There is no better place to try them than Binondo’s legendary shop, Eng Bee Tin.

Known for its wonderfully baked Hopia, a sweet mung bean or ube-filled pastry encased in a flaky crust, Eng Bee Tin is a must-visit for anybody with a sweet craving.

For a taste of heritage, you can also try Tikoy, a sticky rice cake that is commonly eaten during CNY. The sticky Tikoy comes in a variety of flavors, including original, ube, pandan, and many more.

Eng Bee Tin makes both Hopia and Tikoy fresh, providing the greatest quality and taste. These two treats are ideal for gifting or sharing with family and friends during the CNY celebrations.
