Chelly Lim releases new single, “Wag Kang Mag-alala”

by Gaby Agbulos

FROM THE singer behind hits like “Paulit-Ulit (Sorry Na)”, “Hanggang Kailangan”, and “Ayoko Na” comes “Wag Kang Mag-alala”, a song that explores the emotional journey that comes with rediscovering yourself after being selfless for so many years.

24-year-old Stephen Chelben Lim, otherwise known as “Chelly Lim” is a performer, songwriter, and musician, who quickly fell in love with music after convincing his mother to buy him a guitar while he was still in high school.

That love has only grown since then, with Chelly posting covers on SoundCloud as early as 14 years old, inspired by rock and hip-hop songs from the 90s and 2000s.

His songs have a unique touch to them as he doesn’t shy away from experimenting by fusing nostalgic Original Pilipino Music (OPM) and modern production techniques, which allows for a fresh take on traditional Filipino sounds while appealing to contemporary listeners.

Now a part of 314 Studios, Chelly released his debut music video for his song, “Paulit-Ulit (Sorry Na)” back in 2023. On November 15, he uploaded the music video for “Wag Kang Mag-alala”.

This video was directed and edited by Artwrok, following Chelly as he sings his heart out on an open track field.

About the song

Written and produced by Chelly, the song is an experimental blend of alternative indie and hip-hop, making use of distorted electric guitar riffs and hip-hop-inspired drum beats to add to its complexity.

Aside from Chelly, Raphael Dominic “Leyae” Mesa also mixed and mastered the track, working as its recording engineer.

It takes a look at the uncertainties of life – of a lost soul wandering around in search of purpose. In his song, Chelly says: “‘Di ko ‘lam kung na sa’n na ba ‘ko, nandirito pa ba?; Hinahanap ang sariling mukha ‘ko, nakikita mo ba?”

Aside from exploring the journey and hardships of rediscovering oneself, it gives listeners reassurance.

As seen in lyrics like “‘Wag kang mag-alala kung bukas ‘di mo na ako makita; Isang tawag mo lang naman ay darating agad ako,” Chelly expresses the messages: “I’ll always be here for you”, offering solace and comfort amid his search for personal identity.

Yes, the journey to finding yourself may be hard, but there’s no reason that you have to face it alone.
