Celebrate National Women’s Month with Free Film Screenings in Intramuros

by Rescel Ocampo

IN celebration of the National Women’s Month, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is hosting Cine Juana, a special film screening series highlighting women-centered narratives.

The event will take place every Saturday of March, at Centro de Turismo and Fort Bonifacio Teatro in Intramuros, Manila. Admission is free on a walk-in, first come, first served basis.

According to FDCP, Cine Juana is a “tribute to every Juana making her mark in the world.” Through this initiative, the council aims to amplify the voices of women and showcase their triumphs, resilience, and courage through the power of cinema.

The film lineup features critically acclaimed Filipino movies that center on strong female leads and their complex stories:

  • March 8 Insiang (1976), directed by Lino Brocka, is a classic film about a young woman’s struggle against oppression in a patriarchal society.
  • March 15 Ma’ Rosa (2016), directed by Brillante Mendoza, follows a mother navigating poverty and corruption to protect her family.
  • March 22 Sonata (2013), directed by Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes, tells the story of a former opera diva whose life is changed by an unexpected friendship.
  • March 29 The Chanters (2017), directed by James Robin Mayo, explores the life of a young girl fighting to preserve her indigenous culture in the modern world.
