Cambridge Adds ‘Delulu,’ ‘Skibidi,’ and ‘Tradwife to Dictionary

by Rescel Ocampo

GEN Z slang seems to be taking over the Cambridge Dictionary as they add “delulu,” “skibidi,” “tradwife,” and even “lewk” to their vocabulary.

These words are generally considered to be from the “Tiktok generation” or the individuals who were born in the advent of Tiktok, particularly the Gen Zs, Gen Alphas, and the younger ones.

“Delulu,” a term often used by the younger generation, is defined by Cambridge as an adjective that means believing things that are not real or true, usually because you choose to.

Meanwhile, “Skibidi” also made the list. It refers to “a word that can have different meanings such as “cool” or “bad,” or can be used with no real meaning as a joke.”

Tradwife’ was also included, referring to social media portrayals of married women who embrace a traditional role—staying at home to cook, clean, and care for their children. The term is short for ‘traditional wife.’

Finally, “lewk” puts a playful twist on the word “look,” and is used to describe a distinctive or bold style, especially one that stands out and grabs attention.

Cambridge Dictionary has also welcomed a few unexpected additions.

Among them is “broglicarchy,” which describes an elite circle of wealthy men, particularly those tied to the tech industry, who wield significant economic and political influence.

“It’s not every day you get to see words like skibidi and delulu make their way into the Cambridge Dictionary. We only add words where we believe they’ll last,” said Colin McIntosh in a statement, Lexical Programme Manager at Cambridge Dictionary.

“Internet culture is reshaping the English language, and it’s fascinating to watch and record these changes in the Dictionary,” he added.
