Bringing back MySpace (kind of): How to add music to your IG profile

by Gaby Agbulos

MUCH like how people used to add different tracks to their MySpace pages, Instagram has added a new feature allowing people to add songs to their profiles.

According to The Verge, Instagram launched this new feature in collaboration with artist Sabrina Carpenter.

The “Espresso” singer’s Instagram page featured a teaser of her latest song, “Taste,” ahead of her album release, with the profile music feature being the only way people could hear the song early.

To use this new feature, simply go to your Instagram profile, click on Settings, and scroll down until you find a new category labeled “Music.”

From there, you can choose whatever song you’d like (as long as it’s in Instagram’s music library,) and change it whenever you’re in the mood for a different tune.

You can also adjust the part that people will hear, as you can only have up to 30 seconds of the song playing on your profile.

Take note that this won’t play automatically, unlike MySpace; you have to press the play button next to the song. You can also only have one song playing at a time.

Nostalgia for a different time

Now, it seems that there are more and more trends reminiscent of the 2000s internet scene popping up.

MySpace is just one example of this, with many emulating it via their coding abilities. On websites like Tumblr, for instance, you can change your background and your cursor, just as you could do on MySpace.

Many have called MySpace the perfect social media site, in that it was more passive as compared to social media applications people have now.

“MySpace was basically like creating a personal homepage,” explained Tim Marcin, a writer for Mashable Southeast Asia.

“You could customize colors and designs, have your favorite track playing on your page, post status updates, talk with pals by leaving comments, and, most notably, rank your Top 8 friends.”

The new music feature isn’t the only thing that’s reminding people of the website, either; people have also likened their Notes feature to the AIM away message back in the day.

Others have also tried to emulate MySpace, as seen in how Gen Z entrepreneur Tiffany Zhong created a copycat version of the website called “NoSpace.” It’s since been changed, however, to “NoPlace.”

According to the New York Post, Zhong hoped to give Gen Zs the same social media experience millennials had, giving users the ability to customize their profile pages, share casual updates, and also have a list of the user’s closest friends.

Those who tested the app have likened it to one global group chat, as there is a “friends only” chat and a chronological global feed that features all active users in real time.

With regard to the creation of this app, Zhong said: “It feels lonely to be in a world where we’re just watching our own content, or our own personalized feed of content and videos, instead of connecting with others. Socializing is so much more important than ever. It doesn’t exist anymore.”

As seen in how 380, 000 people immediately signed up for the waitlist of NoSpace, how people immediately dove into the usage of Instagram’s latest feature, and how Facebook users quickly abused the hell of the newly revived “poke” feature, it’s safe to say that nowadays, people are craving a simpler, more personalized social media experience.
