THE Devil wears Prada—and now, a lighter crown.

After nearly four decades as American Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Anna Wintour is stepping aside.

Wintour informed staff on Thursday that she would be leaving her post at the US edition of Vogue, a position she’s held since 1988.

While this marks the end of her historic run shaping America’s fashion bible, it’s not a full goodbye.

Wintour will continue to serve as Vogue’s global editorial director and Condé Nast’s chief content officer, overseeing the brand’s global vision while scaling back her day-to-day involvement with the US title.

With her signature bob, oversized glasses, and icy pose, Wintour transformed Vogue from a traditional fashion magazine into a cultural institution. She defined what was in— and who was in it.

It was during her reign that Vogue became more than just a fashion magazine but a cultural barometer.

She mixed supermodels with superstars, placing Beyoncé, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, and Serena Williams alongside fashion royalty. Under her watch, even the then First Lady—Michelle Obama—graced the cover in a moment that merged politics with style and representation.

Wintour also transformed the Met Gala from a stuffy museum fundraiser into the most-watched fashion event in the world. As its chair since 1995, she curated iconic moments and crafted themes that turned the red carpet into a global runway.

Now, as she steps away from the American edition’s top job, a new era begins. A new leader will be appointed to oversee the US edition under the title “Head of Editorial Content”—a freshly minted role that suggests a move toward a more inclusive and less hierarchical editorial model.
