A LOVE that began with a childhood admiration and has eventually grown into a deeper yet unspoken affection.
“Ang Huling El Bimbo” by Eraserheads is an alternative rock that remains one of the timeless Original Pilipino Music (OPM) classics released in 2005. Many OPM songs have featured various love stories that we can all relate to. From a simple crush to a slow burn kind of love, unreciprocated feelings, and even heartbreaks, OPM has it covered!
However, “Ang Huling El Bimbo” challenged these narratives of love in OPM.
Starting with the recollection of how fascinated the narrator was, listeners were given a glimpse of an emerging admiration from a child’s point of view. The subtle unknown feeling that creeps in his vivid memory while reminding him of what she loves and her favorites signifies a love that has always been there.
Kamukha mo si Paraluman
No’ng tayo ay bata pa
At ang galing-galing mong sumayaw
Mapa-boogie man o cha-cha
Ngunit ang paborito
Ay pagsayaw mo ng El Bimbo
Nakakaindak, nakakaaliw
Nakakatindig-balahibo
A love that has vanished over time is less likely to recall moments from childhood as everyone does. But because it has never faded, those moments replayed in his head clearly—enough for him to share everything in detail.
Pagkagaling sa ‘skuwela ay dederetso na sa inyo
At buong maghapon ay tinuturuan mo ako
Magkahawak ang ating kamay
At walang kamalay-malay
Na tinuruan mo ang puso ko
Na umibig na tunay
His feelings developed subtly, only to be awakened on a random day realizing he should have confessed. The longing, the what ifs, and the could’ve beens—all boil down from the fear of possibly losing a chance to confess.
Sana noon pa man ay sinabi na sa iyo
Kahit hindi na uso ay ito lang ang alam ko
Time flew swiftly, and in a blink of an eye, they’d outgrown their childhood. Fate had its twist, the girl whom she admired for being lively lost the colors of life. Without a word for years, he only learned about her by the time he had completely lost his chance to let her know.
Lumipas ang maraming taon
‘Di na tayo nagkita
Balita ko’y may anak ka na
Ngunit walang asawa
Tagahugas ka raw
Ng pinggan sa may Ermita
At isang gabi’y nasagasaan
Sa isang madilim na eskinita, ha
The daydreaming and hopes of holding her hand to dance once again as he has finally learned the steps ended. With no sequel, she left without being told that she didn’t just teach someone to dance; she also taught him how to love.
Lahat ng pangarap ko’y bigla lang natunaw
Sa panaginip na lang pala kita maisasayaw
As the chorus repeated, the recollection of their childhood memory was no longer about reminiscing—it became a longing for another chance to dance with her as a final act of love and cherish every second, every beat, and every moment their skin touches.
“Ang Huling El Bimbo” is more than just a song. It is a narrative of how love comes in waves—the joy that comes at its peak and the agony it brings as it ends. The song explored the bittersweet truth about loving, the hesitations that come with professing, and the painful reality that others do not always get the chance to make someone know that love has always existed even before it is said.
