ANDY Gemao, a 17-year-old hooper from Letran High School, could be the next Filipino athlete to chase his international ambitions.
The reigning NCAA Jrs. Finals MVP is on his way to the United States to try out for Veritas Academy National Prep.
Veritas Academy National Prep, located in Malibu, California, is a Nike Elite high school. According to his coach, Allen Ricardo, Gemao will spend a month in the United States assessing whether he can formally transfer before departing Letran.
During NCAA Season 98, the high-flying guard stood out as the Finals MVP.
Gemao concluded the season with a season-high 18.5 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.8 assists. He led the Squires to their first championship in 22 years with an 8-1 record in the eliminations.
He recently competed in NBA Basketball Without Borders Asia in Abu Dhabi, where he was named an all-star.
Ricardo mentioned that his goal as a coach is to take his players to the next level, which is collegiate basketball, and eventually to the professional leagues.
However, they have a grander plan for Gemao.
“Si Andy, we’re trying to help him reach the international level,” he said.
Despite the possibility of losing his star player, Ricardo cannot hide his excitement for the opportunity that awaits his wards.
“I’m happy for them. That’s what I want for my players—to play at the highest level of basketball and to help their families,” he stated.
Gemao was scheduled to fly to the United States on Thursday morning, bringing with him the dream of representing the whole country.
He can expect a lot of love and support, not just from Letran but from the entire Filipino basketball community.
