Warning: This article contains spoilers for “Alice in Borderland”.

THE LONG-AWAITED Netflix series is finally making a comeback!

If you’ve been missing the nerve-wracking episodes of “Alice in Borderland”, don’t worry, because the long wait for a new season is almost over.

A short recap

The show follows Arisu, who is by any means just an average guy, who suddenly ends up in a dangerous world where he must play perilous games and win cards for his survival.

Season 1 ended with Arisu at a place called the Beach where he, and other characters, Usagi, Kuina, and Chishiya uncover the truth about the games that they have been playing.

They were told that they can now advance to the next stage of the games, which thus becomes the start of season 2.

The group have no choice but to once again take part in a variety of different games, however, they do so separated from one another.

Here, a new group of bosses called the “citizens” are introduced, whom people like Arisu first have to defeat to get through the games.

Season 2 explores the different story arcs of each character, with a shocking twist ending: everyone had been hospitalized this entire time.

This entire time, the “border” in “Borderland” meant that between life and death.

However, the season ended with the camera zooming in on a Joker card, perhaps hinting that the games aren’t over just yet – that maybe there’s a game Arisu and his companions still have yet to play.

Fans, thus, cannot wait for the release of season 3, especially after it was announced that it would be debuting on Netflix next year.

This news come directly from Minyoung Kim, the Netflix VP of APAC Content, during her APOS talk on “The Future of Japanese Entertainment”.

No further details, such as its exact release date, or when development and production will begin, have been released.

Many have also noted that whatever they would be doing for season 3 would most probably be diverting directly from the manga it is based on.

Either that, or its events would be taking place years after where the second season.

Whatever it may be, fans are surely excited for the season that has yet to come.

About the adaptation

“Alice in Borderland” is based on a manga of the same name, created by Hara Aso.

The Netflix series was directed by Shinsuke Sato and written by Yasuko Kuramitsu, with the first season being released back in 2020.

It quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular international shows, even setting records for the most hours viewed in a week for a Japanese series.

It has also won and been nominated for several awards at the Asia Contents Awards, as well as the Asian Academy Creative Awards.
