BRITISH actor and producer Theo James is the newest addition to the list of global Goodwill Ambassadors according to UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency, on Monday, June 17.

In a UNHCR press release, The Gentleman and The White Lotus star James was said to be a UNHCR supporter since 2016. As an active advocate, he has been amplifying refugees’ voices through participating in fundraisers and visiting refugees in Greece and Jordan.

Upon his appointment, James expressed his gratitude to his family whom he considers as the people who enlightened him about the plight of refugees.

“I am very proud to join UNHCR as a Goodwill Ambassador. The experience of my own family has given me an understanding of the sacrifices and struggles that refugees face,” he said.

He also mentioned his grandfather whose “courage and resilience” has driven him to help make a difference to the lives of displaced people.”

“My grandfather was welcomed and offered shelter by the people of Syria, which enabled him to rebuild his life as a doctor and give something back. That’s why it is important for me to stand in solidarity with refugees who have fled conflicts today, and to help share their stories,” he added.

UNHCR’s Director of External Relations Dominique Hyde warmly welcomed the newly-appointed Goodwill Ambassador, emphasizing the importance of his presence “at a time when more people than ever have been forced to flee their homes.”

“As a long-standing supporter, he has shown genuine commitment and empathy towards refugees and has provided a vital contribution towards our advocacy and fundraising work,” the official said. 

Goodwill Ambassadors are considered the faces of UNHCR. Through their own contributions, they bring the mission and advocacy of UNHCR alive in every part of the world.
