IT IS the wet season in the Philippines, which means people expect to deal with persistent rains.
The inclement weather, however, sometimes prompts them to cancel their initial plans and stay home.
While several individuals use this opportunity to do pending household chores, others opt to cheer themselves up by watching their favorite movie or series. On the other hand, some stare at their window or wall and listen to music, either reflecting on life or reminiscing.
Republicasia asked several Gen Zs about that one song they always listen to when it rains and the list below is a compilation of their answers:
‘Ulan’ by Cueshè
It is undeniable how the rain and the gloomy weather make someone emotional, unearthing memories of the past including the painful ones.
One song that may trigger a heartbreaking memory is “Ulan” by Pinoy rock band Cueshè. Released in 2005, this classic song is about a person’s endless suffering and heartache after they were left by their beloved. Most Gen Zs first heard the song in their younger days but listening to it now feels nostalgic and more relatable.
‘Asleep Among Endives’ by Ichiko Aoba
Gloomy days often bring calmness and a quiet moment for some individuals to reflect and detach themselves from the noise and demands of the world.
This is what Japanese singer-songwriter Ichiko Aoba wants people to feel by listening to “Asleep Among Endives.” The song, released in 2021, feels like a lullaby that allows the listener to find tranquility and solace.
‘Chilly’ by Niki
From dealing with a painful breakup, others may be reminded of their emotional healing journey.
This resonates with “Chilly,” a song Indonesian singer-songwriter Niki released in 2017. The single also highlights how a person rediscovers oneself but harbors the feeling of numbness and disconnection with others.
‘Linger’ by The Cranberries
Another classic gem that Gen Z listens to is “Linger” by Irish rock band The Cranberries, released in 1993.
Today’s young individuals were not even born when the song was released, yet they found themselves relating to it. The song was personal for the band’s former lead vocalist Dolores O’Riordan as it was inspired by her experience of being rejected by a guy, who gave her a “first proper kiss,” during her teenage years.
‘Para Sa Akin’ by Jason Dhakal
“Para Sa Akin” is also a classic Original Pinoy Music (OPM), first sung by Sitti in 2006. However, Jason Dhakal’s rendition of the song has been winning the hearts of many young individuals.
Released in 2023, Dhakal’s cover captures one’s yearning and unconditional love for another person, even without the assurance that their romantic feelings will be reciprocated. While this might be a love song for others, “Para Sa Akin” opened a door for Dhakal to discover bossa nova, a Brazilian popular music developed in the late 1950s.
