THE live-action film adaptation of Makoto Shinkai’s acclaimed anime, “5 Centimeters per Second,” unveiled its main poster, featuring its lead stars Hokuto Matsumura and Mitsuki Takahata.
The poster featured a cherry blossom tree in a snowy setting, and the lead stars gazing off into space as though they were yearning for something.

In the forthcoming live-action adaptation film, Matsumura plays the role of Takaki Tono, while Takahata portrays Akari Shinohara.
The two main characters become childhood close friends, but Takaki harbors romantic feelings for Akari. With their families often relocating, Takaki and Akari soon get separated from each other.
Shinkai—known for his hit films “Your Name,” “Weathering with You,” and “Suzume”—wrote and directed the original 2007 animated film. Meanwhile, the live-action film adaptation of “5 Centimeters per Second” is helmed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama.
In June, TOHO unveiled a 30-second teaser on YouTube, following Takaki’s journey from childhood to adulthood. It captures Japan’s stunning sceneries, from countryside wonders to cityscapes.
A voice-over of a guy could be heard at the outset of the clip, saying, “I’m always searching for some trace of those days somewhere.”
It ended with a voice-over of a young girl, apparently explaining the film’s title.
“The speed at which cherry blossoms fall is five centimeters per second,” she said.
The live-action film adaptation of “5 Centimeters per Second” will roll out in Japanese cinemas on October 10, 2025.
As of writing, there are no details yet on whether the movie will also be shown in Philippine theaters.
