Gabriela rep demands apology from Robin Padilla over womanizing remark

by Izel Abanilla

GABRIELA Women’s Party Rep. Arlene Brosas slammed Sen. Robin Padilla over his remark that he wanted to quit the Senate because he cannot run after women while he is in the legislature.

Padilla made the statement in the course of defending his proposal to amend the constitution. He said he was only after changes to the economic provisions and not the political ones, as he has no desire to remain in power.

In fact, he wanted to resign from the Senate because “hindi po ako makapang chicks dito,” he said, seemingly in jest.

Nothing to laugh about

But Brosas did not find anything funny in his remark.

“We would like to remind Senator Robin Padilla that his job is to address gaps in current laws and not womanizing. Women should not be treated like mere objects that men can use in their spare time,” she said in a statement on Wednesday, February 22.

“If Senator Padilla is still confused on whether to serve the people or continue womanizing in the Senate, we suggest that he contemplate if he is still fit to work as a public servant,” she added.

She said the remarks of Padilla, who chairs the Committee on Constitutional Amendments and Revision of Codes, was “unbecoming of an official.”

“It reeks of misogyny and toxic masculinity, which should not be tolerated in this society,” she added.

Padilla, who is married with children, should  issue a public apology and “uphold his sworn duty as a legislator with utmost devotion and respect to Filipino women.”

She also described Padilla’s remark as an “uncalled for macho theatrics” to divert attention from issues surrounding the proposed charter change.

Moreover, she doubts Padilla’s statement that he has no intention to pursue political amendments to the constitution, pointing out that he has pushed for federalism. This would require amendments to the charter’s political provisions.

As of press time, Padilla has yet to respond to Brosas’ demand.

Robin and women

Padilla, a veteran action star, has a reputation for being a ladies man as a result of strings of high-profile relationships he had in and out of the industry.

He is currently married to actress-TV host Mariel Rodriguez with whom he has two daughters. He had a former wife, Liezl Sicangco with whom he has three children, including actress Kylie Padilla.
