Which provinces have the most flood control projects?

by Deanna Macaranas

FLOOD CONTROL PROJECTS have been one of the hot topics that has been on our screen for a month now as the government tries to tackle the cause of the frequent flooding in many areas despite the small amount of rain.

Following the stormy incidents that disrupted the livelihood of Filipinos, the government began conducting research into which they discovered that such corruption is present, lingering in the presence of said flood control projects.

In his previous State of the Nation Address (SONA), President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. called out those politicians who were pocketing money that are meant for flood control projects.

His statement, “Mahiya naman kayo,” has resonated with many Filipinos, and as part of his initiative to further put down those who are accountable, he has recently launched the website “sumbong sa pangulo” so that residents can anonymously report flood projects near their areas.

The website was then flooded with complaints by Filipino citizens, which led to the discovery of those areas that have the most flood projects.

Among the top three provinces with the most number of flood control projects are Bulacan, Cebu, and Isabela.

Meanwhile, the top 20 list of the most flood project controls are as follows, along with the total of the said flood projects.

  • Bulacan    – 668
  • Cebu – 414

  • Iloilo – 168
  • Rizal – 167
  • Cagayan – 167
  • La Union – 166

In a previous privilege speech of Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson last August 20 (Wednesday), he revealed that Bulacan is the “most notorious in terms of anomalies” in flood control projects of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

In total, Bulacan had bagged a total of P43.5 billion worth of flood control contracts from the year 2021 to 2024. Baliwag, Bulacan, takes the lead in the most flood control contracts, with a total of 87 projects that cost P6.02 billion.
