#RepublicAsiaTurns2: Empowering Gen Z Voters through #BotoNgKabataan2025

by Bryan Gadingan

THE 2025 National and Local Elections (NLE) in the Philippines have enormous effects for the country’s future, particularly for Generation Z, which is becoming a more active and prominent demographic.

As voters, advocates, and future leaders, the decisions they make in the 2025 midterm elections will determine not only their immediate political environment, but also the nation’s overall trajectory.

This generation is growing up in an era of rapid social change, greater political consciousness, and increased access to information via digital platforms, making them well-versed in the present state of society.

The game changers

Unlike different and earlier generations, which were often politically passive or less involved in election processes, the Gen Zs are more politically engaged, aware, and vocal.

According to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), next year will be a critical year since approximately 20 million Filipino Gen Zs are projected to vote in the midterm polls, which is enough to elect a candidate.

This generation is about to play a significant part in the nation’s fate, as they are no longer only considered game changers, but they are the game changers, as the country’s political landscape will be determined by their vote.

Gen Z, also known as the “digital generation,” is does not simply accept new knowledge. They can be actors and shapers of technology and information that can be delivered through digital technology.

In honor of republicasia’s second year anniversary, let us reflect on the avenue or platform they developed to provide these Generation Zs with a voice and accurate election information.

#BotoNgKabataan2025

Boto ng Kabataan 2025 is a campaign launched by republicasia on October 1, 2024, when the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) and certificates of nomination and acceptance (CONA) began.

The purpose of this campaign is to educate and motivate Filipinos, particularly first-time voters and youth, on the importance of picking the appropriate candidate and actively participating in the democratic process.

The #BotoNgKabataan2025 campaign encourages civic responsibility while offering useful information on issues, policies, and candidates who will steer our community during the campaign and election periods.

Furthermore, republicasia has been present throughout the process of submitting COCs and CONAs, covering and giving breaking news as these prospective candidates shared their visions for the country.

Many articles have been written since the beginning of the campaign, discussing issues such as how branding affects a candidate’s chances, what Gen Zs should know about party lists, and other educational pieces.

For a more engaging experience, video counterparts are also released on republicasia’s social media accounts, highlighting broader subjects that Gen Zs should be aware of before the election.

Two years may have passed, but the company continues to stick to its branding of delivering an interactive news platform where Gen Zs can actively participate, not just as readers or listeners, but as storytellers themselves.

Made by Gen Zs, for the Gen Zs

In an interview, a few Gen Z journalists from republicasia discussed the process of bridging current news to their own generation, especially now that the Filipinos require it more.

“The republicasia team launched the #BotoNgKabataan2025 to provide accurate information on candidates, their views on certain issues and platforms, which may help Filipino voters, including the young generation, in choosing whom to support,” Joanna Deala said.

“Aside from delivering the latest election-related news, the special coverage also serves as a platform for the young voters to freely express their insights and hopes for the upcoming midterm polls.”

“It is our duty to ensure that these election-related narratives are accessible, relevant, and directly speaks to the needs and interests of the young audience,” the Gen Z writer further explained.

Meanwhile, Gaby Agbulos’ primary purpose for this campaign is to spread the truth to the masses, particularly Gen Z.

“The next midterm elections are crucial in determining the future of the country, and as such, it is our job as journalists to ensure that Filipinos are making well-informed decisions,” she said.

Leading up to the 2025 NLE, these Gen Zs and Filipino citizens may count on republicasia to continue publishing accurate election-related news, knowing that your vote, your voice, and your future are important to us.
