AS THE Philippines grapples with the hard reality of climate change, the country faces more severe heat indexes that are not only uncomfortable, but possibly dangerous to an individual.
The heat index, which measures how hot it feels when humidity is added in, has risen over safe limits in several areas, prompting public warnings and increasing worry over the past few weeks.
Schools have already suspended classes and used online alternatives in recent weeks and months owing to unsafe heat index levels. Just today, Science Watch Philippines reported that Manila is under a scorching 47°C.
Given this perspective, it becomes essential for Filipinos to understand how to protect oneself during these trying circumstances. Especially when these levels remains dangerously high.
Be Informed
According to the website of the state weather bureau PAGASA, an excessive heat index can create a variety of health issues for an individual, particularly if exposed to the heat for an extended period of time.
Other factors of heat-related health concerns include excessive physical activity, aging, high humidity in a location, obesity, and extended or excessive alcohol consumption.
Symptoms include excessive perspiration, intense weakness, disorientation when standing up, weakness but with high blood pressure, and nausea.
What to do?
As a precaution, individuals should minimize their outdoor activities as much as possible. Postpone strenuous activities such as exercise, yard work, or lifting heavy objects until the heat warning has been lifted.
While staying inside is preferred, open the air conditioning units, use blackout curtains or thermal drapes to reduce indoor heat, and seal windows and doors to retain cool air inside.
It is also crucial to drink enough of water, even if you are not thirsty, and to avoid consuming tea, coffee, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages throughout the day. If you are going out, it is best to wear a light-colored shirt.
Meanwhile, if an individual is experiencing any health issues, it is critical to place them in a shady area, lift their feet, and advise them to drink cold water if they are still conscious.
Aside from that, removing their additional shirt or jacket would be beneficial; getting wet would also help cool down the body; and sufficient ventilation would allow them to breathe properly.
Applying ice to their underarm, pulse, ankle, and groin area might also be beneficial. If things don’t improve, it’s best to rush them to the nearest hospital for proper medical attention.
Gentle Reminder
Extreme heat is no longer a rare occurrence; it is becoming a major public health concern, especially in a tropical country like the Philippines. However, with proper preparedness and community response, the lethal impact can be mitigated.
Recognizing danger indicators, staying hydrated and staying indoors are all important. Extreme heat should be regarded as serious as hurricanes or floods, as the repercussions of neglecting it can be just as disastrous.
When the heat index reaches unsafe levels, don’t delay taking action. Be proactive, aware, and cool headed; given that in the face of extreme weather, community is our most valuable asset.
