THE usual horoscopes you read in the newspapers or online are based on the position of the sun or sun signs. For example, when you are born on December 21, you will be a Sagittarius. But when it comes to love and emotions, let’s move past these sun signs.
Filipino astrologer Resti Santiago taught me this principle when I asked him to discuss the compatibility of people based on their horoscopes.
He said love and emotions are governed by another celestial body — the moon. In astrology, the moon rules the mind and the emotional thinking process.
“The moon sign refers explicitly to the emotional needs of individuals.
“Compatibility with regards to addressing the emotional needs should be based on the moon sign,” Santiago said.
Santiago said for more accurate astrological predictions of one’s emotional or love needs, they also look at the ascendant signs (or rising sign), and other planets. But for the sake of simplicity in this article, we shall only focus on the moon signs.
How to calculate moon sign
Your moon sign may be different from your sun sign. The moon’s position on one’s birth varies — which changes every 2.5 days.
In my case, my sun sign is Aquarius. And my moon sign is Capricorn.
On the one hand, your sun and moon signs may be the same.
How will you know your moon sign? Take out your birth certificate and write the following:
- Date of birth – including year
- The exact time of birth
- Place of birth
Then, go to portals where there are available astrological calculations for moon signs, like www.astro.com or www.filipinoastrologer.com.
Once you know your moon sign and your partner’s sign, let’s look at the four elements which generally rule the 12 Zodiac moon signs:
Fire signs
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
With fire as their common element, these three fire signs need adventure, fun and even some aspects of fighting. They need to have a dynamic relationship.
“Kailangan maraming exchanges of ideas,” he said.
The three fire signs are in “friendly relationship” with fellow fire signs.
Air signs
Gemini, Libra and Aquarius
Air moon signs are logical, articulate and process their emotions logically. They tend towards over-rationality and detachment from the emotional side of life.
“They have clear emotional perspective. Sharing their emotions is one way they deal with it,” Santiago said.
Fire and air ‘compatible’
Santiago said air signs would support the fire signs.
“Fire signs sort of enlighten the lights of the air signs. May dynamic positive,” Santiago said.
Earth signs
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Earth signs are practical people, dependable and grounded.
They love the earth so much they want to spend time with nature.
“Earth signs need tangible things. They want security, most important for them. They are future-oriented,” he said.
Water signs
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Water signs are immersed in the deeper aspects of the soul. Empathy and feelings are essential to them.
“Emotional security is important for them. Bonding, relationship, family,” Santiago said.
Earth and water signs ‘compatible’
Santiago said in astrology theory, water and earth are compatible.
“Water needs emotional security and dependability. Generally, they get this from the earth signs, kasi mas dependable ang mga earth signs.
“Earth signs get nourishment from water signs who are very caring individuals. They can address each other’s needs,” he explained.
‘Incompatibility’
It’s a fact that despite deep love for one another and efforts to revive it, relationships end. Many just shrugged it off as being “incompatible.” But when you take a look at their moon signs, there is a high probability that one is either fire or air moon sign and the partner is either earth or water moon sign.
“Fire and air, kailangan ng activity, action, movement. Eh yung earth and water longs for security and stability,” he explained.
Why know your partner’s moon sign
Santiago said it is essential to know your partner’s or spouse’s moon sign so you can be guided on how the relationship will flow.
“Kung alam mo water sign ang partner mo, alam mo paano ma-address yung emotional needs nya. Kung earth sign, bigyan mo ng something tangible or valuable,” he said.
It can also be a tool for you to understand what went wrong or what’s wrong with your relationship.
He said some couples had consulted him on whether to go ahead or not with their marriage or relationship.
“Meron don tayong napayuhan na hindi sila compatible, naghanap ng iba,” he said.
But the most common inquiry from his clients is the timing of their weddings.
For more accurate or personal readings, astrologers would need to chart the birthdate of the clients vis-a-vis the sun, moon, the planets and the rising sign.
Resti Santiago, Filipino Astrologer
In the end, astrology is simply a “tool” for understanding ourselves and others. The stars are just a guide, not the definitive chart to everyone’s destiny and “compatibility.”
