Can’t post on Twitter? Maybe you’ve reached your tweet limit

by Jericho Zafra

FOLLOWING the launch of Twitter Blue’s increased number of tweet characters, a surge of complaints surfaced online.

Users claim they experience errors when posting tweets and sending direct messages to the microblogging platform.

Longer tweets for Blue

From 280 characters, the Twitter Blue subscription allowed members to post up to 4,000 characters, that’s roughly 700 to 1,300 words.

Twitter Blue is the monthly subscription program implemented by the controversial business magnate Elon Musk months after he acquired the firm.

Blue subscribers cost US$8 (Php 440) per month.

Twitter has already fixed the platform’s meltdown. But another issue has been raised by users: the long-form tweets.

According to Musk, the format of Twitter Blue’s long-form tweets is “terrible” and it is expected that the new version will be rolled out this week.

Limits for lesser Twitter mortals

But this other Twitter event is not a glitch, or maybe, a timely coincidence that many Twitter users have been unable to post their tweets as they experience glitches from the platform.

Twitter’s new policy: every user should only post 2,400 characters per day.

What happens if you reach your tweet limit?

“If you do reach a limit, we’ll let you know with an error message telling you which limit you’ve hit. For limits that are time-based (like the Direct Messages, Tweets, changes to account email, and API request limits), you’ll be able to try again after the time limit has elapsed,” said Twitter.

According to Twitter policy, the microblogging platform is imposing a daily cap on the platform usage “for the sake of reliability.”

It also said that the limits’ purpose is to take some of the pressure off of the component of Twitter that operates in the background. It can also reduce the time spent on error pages and maintenance.

As per the platform, in case you don’t know it, the following are the current technical limits for each user:

Direct Messages: The limit is 500 messages sent per day.

Tweets: 2,400 per day.

Twitter said the restriction for daily updates is then divided into smaller limits that apply to semi-hourly intervals.

Word characters per retweet are also considered as additional tweets, it noted.

Users are also restricted from changing Twitter accounts four times per hour. So if you find yourself having a hard time switching accounts. Maybe you have reached the limit.

New Twitter CEO

Amid the controversies surrounding the platform, Musk said he’s planning to appoint a new head of the platform. Still, it noted he first needs to “stabilize” the microblogging platform before passing the leadership to the new chief executive officer.

“I think I need to stabilize the organization and just make sure it’s in a financially healthy place and that the product roadmap is clearly laid out,” Musk said at the World Government Summit in Dubai.

Musk took over the leadership of Twitter in October 2022 after he acquired the platform for $44 billion.

Twitter chaos

After his acquisition, the platform has been embroiled in a series of controversies after he rolled out paid verification which led to various imposter accounts obtaining verified status or blue checks.

Among the fake accounts who got their accounts verified were Jesus, Satan, and former United States President George W. Bush.
