THE biggest Korean group leading the biggest music festival? Count me in!

KPop girl group BLACKPINK will be one of the headliners in the upcoming spring music festival Coachella, along with Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny and alternative R&B singer-songwriter Frank Ocean.

Koreans in Coachella

The four-piece Korean girl group composed of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa performed at Coachella in 2019.

Other Korean acts featured in the previous Coachella festivals include Epik High, Bibi, CL, 2NE1, and aespa.

But this year is the first time a KPop group or artist has been invited to perform as a stage headliner.

This means BLACKPINK the first ever KPop group to hold the said title.

BLACKPINK will set the stage on fire at the star-studded spring festival on April 15 and 22 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival will be held on April 14 to 23 and will feature various artists including Rosalía, Jackson Wang, Latto, Charli XCX, Mura Masa, The Chemical Brothers, Becky G, and Blondie to name a few.

Why Coachella a big deal

Since the first Coachella in 1999, the music festival has attracted flocks of people of various ages who want to enjoy a mix of established and up-and-coming artists.

Coachella is also the perfect place to enjoy and hear brand new songs that are set to release in the coming summer. Aside from the extravagant music experience, Coachella is also home to spectacular art pieces, architecture, fashion, and paintings displayed around the venue.

In 1999, Coachella’s attendance reached 25,000. Over the years, the festival has been reported to have an annual attendance equalling to 100,000.

However, the festival was absent for two years in 2020 and 2021 and only returned to the stadium in April 2022.

Last year’s Coachella welcomed over 750,000 attendees, mainly because of the less stringent pandemic restrictions and a line-up of this generation’s most celebrated artists including Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, and The Weeknd.

The rise of BLACKPINK

The internationally-acclaimed girl band made their debut in 2016 under YG Entertainment. In the same year, BLACKPINK released their first mini album called Square One with hit tracks Whistle and Boombayah.

In September 2022, the group released its newest album Born Pink and embarked on one of the biggest KPop world tours with the Pink Venom concert that started in October.

The Pink Venom world tour has five legs with 53 sold-out shows in continents Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. The tour is scheduled to end in June 2023.

Get ready, Filo Blinks!

BLACKPINK will be visiting the Philippines for the second time on March 25 and 26, at the Philippine Arena.
