Bakers demand price increases for Pinoy Pandesal and Tasty

by Bryan Gadingan

YOU might want to take that bite into a smaller piece and chew slowly.

As prices of basic commodities continue to climb, so too will the Pinoy Pandesal and Pinoy Tasty Bread.

According to Chito Chavez, president of the Samahang Panadero ng Pilipinas, bakers want to raise the price of Pinoy Pandesal by P0.20 and Pinoy Tasty by P2 due to rising costs.

Chavez stated that the Department of Trade and Industry had earlier allowed just a P2 increase in the price of Pinoy Tasty, rather than the P4 increase suggested by the makers.

“Pero ang kahilingan po namin noon ay apat na piso, dahil napakamura nga po nito,” he said, noting that the raise was only half of what they had requested and may not be sufficient.

On the other hand, considering that the price rise they asked was not met, and production costs continue to skyrocket, SPP President Chaves stated:

Given the possibility that their request for a price hike could be questioned, Chavez noted that flour costs have climbed to P950 per bag, up from P700 during the previous increase. For him, this is more than enough to persuade the authorities to examine their proposal.

However, Chavez stressed that the price rise would only take effect once the DTI approved the request. Otherwise, the prices of the aforementioned breads will remain unchanged from their current values.

So, chew that pandesal like you mean it!
