A blessed rainy Sunday, Philippines!

by Malou Talosig-Bartolome

A blessed Sunday to all. Most of the Philippines will continue to experience rain today. Let’s pray it will just be light, apt for shower blessings.

Pagasa state weather specialist Benison Estareja said the low pressure area that they are monitoring has already dissipated. The Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is the weather phenomenon that’s causing light to moderate, at times heavy rains in some parts of Luzon and Samar today, November 20.

The most affected areas will be:

Metro Manila

Calabarzon

Mimaropa

Bicol region

Isabela

Quirino

Nueva Vizcaya

Aurora

Bulacan

Northern Samar

Eastern Samar

What’s the effect of ITCZ

Pagasa warned of flooding, rain-induced landslides in areas that are “highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards.”

Residents and local disaster officials are encouraged to check on the hazard maps in their areas especially if the expected rainfall will be heavy. Regional offices of Pagasa may issue local heavy rainfall warnings and rainfall/thunderstorm advisories specific to their areas of responsibility.

What is ITCZ again?

ITCZ or the inter-tropical convergence zone is the band of clouds consisting of showers, with occasional thunderstorms, that encircles the globe near the equator. The seasonal shifts in the location of the ITCZ affects rainfall in many countries near the equator including the Philippines.

Three-day outlook (Nov 21-23)

Effects of ITCZ will temper in Luzon in the next three days, but watch out Mindanao! ITCZ is coming back in the coming days.

Metro Manila. Generally warm and humid weather with 24-31°C temperature. Less chance of rain in the morning on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Baguio City. Good weather, morning and afternoon, and not so humid at 16-24°C temperature. Less chance of rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Legazpi City. Will still experience rains due to ITCZ. But rains may not be as heavy on Monday, and will slightly improve on Tuesday and Wednesday with cloudy and localized thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Metro Cebu. Hot but a bit rainy especially in the afternoon and evening. Temperature will be 25-31°C

Metro Davao. “Pwede na po maglaba,” Estareja said. It’s gonna be hot and humid weather, with temperature rising up to 32-33 °C. With the return of ITCZ, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings may be rainy with localized thunderstorms.
