6-hour shutdown of Philippine airspace scheduled for May 17 – MIAA

by Carl Santos

Expect flight changes as the country’s airspace will be shut down for six hours on May 17 to give way to maintenance activity on the air traffic management system.

The airspace shutdown will be from midnight to 6 a.m. on May 17, according to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) on Tuesday, May 2.

At a news conference, MIAA Senior General Manager Bryan Co said the replacement and maintenance of the uninterruptible power supply of the Communications, Navigations, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management System would be done that day.

A maintenance activity will also be implemented on May 3, but for a shorter period from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m., the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines said in a separate statement.

“The CAAP assures the public that once the maintenance activity is completed, operations at the ATMC (Air Traffic Management Center) will resume as normal and will allow CAAP-ATMC to serve the flying public better and ensure continued flight safety. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring the safety and efficiency of our air traffic management system,” it said.

MIAA’s announcement came a day after thousands of passengers bound for domestic destinations were affected by the power outage at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

MIAA General Manager Cesar Chiong said they were looking at all possible reasons for the power outage.

On January 1, a power outage knocked out the air traffic management system at NAIA, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights and affecting thousands of passengers.
