by Carl Santos

Five schools in the Philippines made it to the QS World University Rankings 2024.

The University of the Philippines led the group, placing 404th, up from No. 412 previously.

Ateneo de Manila University improved to 563rd from its previous rank of 651–700.

De La Salle University jumped from the 801-1000 bracket to the 681-690 bracket, while the University of Santo Tomas, which was in the 801-1000 bracket in 2023, settled in the 801-850 bracket.

The University of San Carlos debuted in the 1201–1400 band.

”The 2024 QS World University Rankings see three of four of the Philippines’ previously ranked universities rise up the table, driven by a flourishing reputation among international employers and its highly employable graduates,” QS Quacquarelli Symonds, the world’s leading provider of services, analytics, and insight to the global higher education sector, said in a statement on Wednesday.

A total of 1500 institutions were ranked for this edition based on the following indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-staff ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, international research network, employment outcomes, and sustainability.

“The Philippines excels in employment-related indicators, earning high marks in employer reputation and employment outcomes. However, it faces challenges in research metrics such as citations per faculty and international research networks that hinder its progress,” QS Quacquarelli Symonds senior vice president Ben Sowter said.

“Despite its vibrant economy, civil friction and an overwhelming number of higher education institutions stifle its ability to innovate, adapt, and advance. For now, the nation’s research efforts need improvement, emphasizing the importance of global collaboration and investing in trained lecturers,” he added.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology maintained its hold on the top spot for the 12th consecutive year, while the National University of Singapore was ranked the best Asian university, placing eighth.
