by RepublicAsia

TAYLOR Swift has dominated the 2023 MTV Video Music Award nominations with a total of eight—seven for the Anti-Hero music video and a nod for the Artist of the Year category, MTV announced on Tuesday.

The multi-awarded singer-songwriter is followed by SZA, who earned six.

Swift, 33, already has 14 VMA trophies to her name, following Beyoncé with 28, Madonna with 20, and Lady Gaga with 19.

Other popular musicians like Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sam Smith received five nominations each.

Meanwhile, K-pop girl group BLACKPINK, Diddy, and Shakira obtained four nods.

For the first time since its introduction in 2017, the MTV Artist of the Year nominees are all women: Swift, Beyoncé, Doja Cat, Karol G, Minaj, and Shakira.

The female artists who took six of the seven spots for Video of the Year nominees include the following:

  • Doja Cat for Attention
  • Miley Cyrus for Flowers
  • Nikki Minaj for Super Freaky Girl
  • Olivia Rodrigo for vampire
  • SZA for Kill Bill
  • Taylor Swift for Anti-Hero

Smath Smith & Petras’ Unholy got the seventh nod.

This year’s VMA will set a record with 35 first-time nominees, which includes Petras, Metro Boomin, and Rema.

The VMAs added a new category this year, the Best Afrobeats, which is the third genre-specific category that the award-giving body has included in this century after Latin (2006) and K-pop (2019).

The award show will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on September 12.

Fan voting across 15 gender-neutral categories began on Tuesday and is open until September 1, while voting for the Best New Artist will remain active throughout the show.
