Super Mom: The love of a PWD mother

by Deanna Macaranas

MOTHERHOOD is fundamentally about resilience, sacrifice, and everlasting dedication.

From the moment of conception, a mother goes on a journey of nurturing and protecting her child in every manner imaginable.

Through the tumultuous waves of life, she remains a constant source of support, offering advice, comfort, and reassurance when the kid is uncertain.

These mother figures, with their unlimited compassion and sacrifice, create a fabric of love and belonging that crosses bloodlines. Furthermore, moms’ impact extends beyond the confines of the family, altering the fundamental fabric of society.

Mothers inspire empathy, compassion, and integrity in their children through their caring touch and firm leadership. They function as cultural stewards, passing on traditions, wisdom, and a resilient legacy to future generations.

In the face of adversity, mothers are pillars of strength, exemplifying courage and grace. They negotiate life’s challenges with steadfast resolution, overcoming hurdles with tenacity and determination.

However, in the midst of motherhood’s numerous responsibilities and expectations, moms frequently overlook their own needs and objectives. Their selflessness knows no limitations, as they devote their heart and soul to developing their children’s ambitions and aspirations.

Mothers exemplify unconditional love via their humble sacrifices and unwavering devotion. Just like this PWD mother from Brgy. 171, Caloocan City, who is not only a selfless mother, but also a selfless individual within the PWD community.

The Story of a Super Mom

In a PTV report by Benjie Dorango—he found a PWD super mom that not only sustain for her children but also for her fellow PWD.

Mommy Dahlia Barredo, a 38-year-old mother from Caloocan City, was in a situation that altered the course of her life and the opportunities that could have come her way if the unfateful event had not occurred.

Barredo was just 17 years old when she had her foot amputated due to a sad accident. Everything that was once a child’s fantasy of a better life vanished right in front of her eyes.

Despite having only one foot, Barredo stood tall for her life. The supermom married and had two children with the love of her life. Qeisha Quirlette is a grade 10 student, while Qwynzhi Weeyalette is in grade 4.

The PTV report also said that according to the National Council on Disability Affairs, our country’s overall number of people with disabilities is 1,567,318 as of May 2024.

These people are part of the vulnerable sector, which need quick attention.

In Caloocan City, there over 30,000 people that are part of the PWD program that is being supported by the local government. However, for Mommy Dahlia–she is one of the people who were lucky enough to have a job.

With her 6,000 pesos monthly salary, Mommy Dahlia is trying to budget her money just so she could provide for her children. But since her salary wasn’t enough to provide for her their daily necessities, Mommy Dhalia had another job on where she sells bracelet, bedsheets, and bags.

This is just one of her Mommy Dahlia’s way to live nobly.

Aside from being a working mom, Mommy Dahlia is also the representative of the PWD of the Baragany 171–making her the person that her fellow PWD run to.

She also bares both responsibilities of both being a mother and a father of her household and while the opportunities isn’t as equal to her, she is still lucky when it comes to friends, colleagues, and children.

Despite having only one leg, Mommy Dahlia was able to slowly finish her races as a mother and as a public servant.

We don’t often see stories of super moms like Mommy Dahlia but upon hearing her story, it makes you see on how much a mother sacrifices just so she would be able to look after everyone.

As for the upcoming Mother’s Day–it is the day on where we honor the hardwork and sacrifices that each mother have done.

Being a super mom isn’t only limited on how many have you done in order to look for everyone around you. Motherhood was never an easy job—thus, making all mothers, a super mom.
