“Succession” director and producer lead new “Harry Potter” HBO TV series

by RepublicAsia

MAX announced on X on Wednesday that “Succession” director Mark Mylod and consulting producer Francesca Gardiner will be leading the upcoming “Harry Potter” HBO television series as one of its directors, and writer and showrunner, respectively.

“Succession” is an HBO original drama-comedy series that won 19 Emmys. Mylod was part of the team as director since the first episode, while Gardiner joined as consulting producer for the third and fourth seasons.

Mylod is known for directing multiple episodes of “Game of Thrones” and is expected to direct more from the upcoming second season of “The Last of Us.” On the other hand, Gardiner is known for producing TV series “His Dark Materials” and “Killing Eve.”

From the official “Harry Potter” website, the Wizarding World, the HBO original is described as a “faithful adaptation” of the beloved book series and will “feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom.”

According to HBO, there will be multiple seasons meant to bring the franchise closer to new audiences, while the original movies are considered classics and cherished, available still on their streaming websites globally.

Warner Bros. Discovery CED David Zaslav announced that the series is expected to be released in 2026 through a collaboration among HBO, Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television.

Warner Bros. Discovery revealed last year their plans to release a new adaptation alongside a “Game of Thrones” prequel as part of their collaboration with HBO to put together HBO Max and Discovery.

The “Harry Potter” franchise is an extremely popular one, having sold 600 million copies worldwide across seven books, which were originally adapted into eight movies grossing $7.7 billion globally for a decade.
