SPOTLIGHT: P-pop boy group Yes My Love revives OPM classics in the P-pop scene

by Joshua Gerona

WHILE most of the P-pop groups in the country are making their own unique discography rooted in the tunes of Western music and Korean pop, one boy group deviates from this path by paying homage to the roots of P-pop as a genre—the OPM classics.

Meet the P-pop vocal powerhouse Yes My Love

Debuted last March 2023 under Cornerstone Entertainment, the group is among the fresh faces in the P-pop scene, composed of Joshua, Niko, Jeff, Brian, and RZ

The quintet is dubbed the “Vocal Heartstoppers of P-pop” as the group seems to make one’s heart stop beating with their out-of-this-world vocal prowess.

Prior to their debut, the group first attempted to give OPM a P-pop spin when they released their own rendition of “Gusto Ko Nang Bumitaw,” originally sung by Sheryn Regis.

This was immediately followed by their debut single, “Rhythm,” written in English and Filipino.

According to the group, each member poured their heart into the making of the single, from writing the lyrics and doing the melodies, down to conceptualizing dance breaks.

Yes My Love performed the debut song for the very first time at the PPOPCOM 2023, an event organized by P-pop fans in response to the postponement of PPOPCON 2023.

The group would release two more singles, “Yayakapin” and “Light Me Up,” before knocking off their 2023 musical journey.

In April 2024, Yes My Love shocked their fans, collectively known as “143,” when they dropped a unique rendition of Jaya’s “Laging Naroon Ka” as part of the group’s revival project of OPM classics.

The quintet made sure to incorporate “boy group” treatment into the song while retaining its original tunes.

They finally unveiled their debut EP called “You, Me, and Love” last Thursday, June 13. The EP is composed of five covers of legendary OPM songs.

The group made a unique P-pop rendition of Roselle Nava’s “Bakit Nga Ba Mahal Kita?,” Kyla’s “Hanggang Ngayon,” Zia Quizon’s “Ako Na Lang,” Liezel Garcia’s “Gisingin ang Puso,” and Jaya’s “Laging Naroon Ka.”

The EP dominated the iTunes Philippines and Singapore on the day of its release, a testament to the striking influence the group holds on the P-pop scene.

Niko, RZ, Jeff, and Brian were former trainees of the idol survival show “Top Class” while Eli was part of the TV5 reality show, “Sing Galing.”

As one of the newest boy groups in the local music scene, they hope to perform their music in various places in the country as well as internationally.

When asked why they are producing music until this day, the group said it is all because of love.

The quintet is planning to release original songs this year aside from their debut EP.
