SPOTLIGHT: Meet the rising stars of P-pop, PLUUS

by Joshua Gerona

UNLIKE many groups in the country who debuted with one or two singles, P-pop boy group PLUUS is considered unique as they are the first P-pop group to debut with an entire mini album and three music videos.

Formerly known as SBTCBoys, PLUUS is composed of Justin (dubbed The Silent Killer), Theo (The Big Brother), JL (The Nation’s Giant Center), Gab (The Ace Face), Haro (The Soul Captivator), and Yen (The Masterpiece).

Their group name is derived from the words “PLUS” and “US,” which means, according to the group, sticking together (the group and their fans called “SUM”) in a journey and the group adding good things to people’s lives through their music.

Meanwhile, the two U’s in the group name emphasize that “you are the center of everything” and “positivity.”

SBTown’s latest boy group made their official debut last March 2023 with the release of their debut mini album, “PLUUS +.Y.M.”

The mini album is composed of three songs: “Amigo,” “My Time,” and “Cross My Heart.” The music videos for these tracks were also released on the group’s debut day.

The debut album is the labor of the group’s four years of extensive training. In a press event, PLUUS revealed that each song in the mini album has its own stories related to the group’s journey.

My Time narrates their journey as trainees while Amigo, a Spanish term for friend, depicts the friendship and strong bond between the members and what they aim to achieve in the future as a group.

Meanwhile, Cross My Heart is about tragic love based on the story of a close friend.

In terms of music styles, the group’s discography is also as diverse as their personalities.

According to their label, the mini album is an amalgamation of K-pop tunes (My Time), American sound (Amigo), and Filipino vibe (Cross My Heart).

The group would release three more singles in 2023, including the R&B “Missing You,” “Shining Star,” and their first-ever Christmas single, “Maligaya Ang Pasko,” in collaboration with girl group and labelmate YGIG.

The group kicked off their 2024 journey with the release of “Universe” and embarked on a series of mall shows across the country as part of the SBTown Universe Tour.

Since each member can sing, dance, rap, and even act, the group is expected to become one of the rising stars of P-pop, seeking to follow in the footsteps of their former senior labelmate SB19.

The group is planning to do activities inside and outside of the country, according to SBTown.

They are set to perform at the upcoming Waterbomb Festival in August, making them the first P-pop group, along with YGIG, to be part of the event.
