Seven Paskong Pinoy-inspired activities you can enjoy in solitude

by Deanna Macaranas

IN THE PHILIPPINES, the idea of a perfect Christmas involves a celebration with family members. Filipinos are deeply family-oriented so, for many of us, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without seeing your tito (uncle), tita (aunt), and pinsan (cousin)

The idea of marking Christmas in solitude might sound like a miserable experience but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are things you can do to avoid feeling like you’re missing out on the fun.

Still have no idea how to make it enjoyable? Check out our list:

Cook your own Noche Buena

While the food that our mom prepares for Noche Buena is something that you’ll yearn for if you were to celebrate Christmas alone, it doesn’t mean that you should miss out on the annual Noche Buena banquet.

You can simply cook your very own feast. Not only will this help to pass the time, you can also develop your very own recipe that you can whip up for next year’s Noche Buena.

Simbang Gabi streaming night

If you’re someone who’s not fond of going out, you can take advantage of modern technology by streaming the Simbang Gabi Masses. Various live streams can now be accessed through the official pages of churches: all it takes is a couple of clicks.

Craft your own parol

Parol (Christmas lantern) is one of the things that makes the Filipino Christmas special. Unleash your creativity by creating your own parol. While the idea of designing one might seem time-consuming, keep in mind that this is something that you can flex on your social media.

Stream all MMFF movies

While going to the cinema nowadays might sound like an expensive idea, you can take advantage of your streaming media platforms and watch all the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) movies that you can find. After all, watching old Filipino Christmas movies will give you a sense of nostalgia.

Virtual caroling session

Caroling sessions are known to be done in-person. But in this modern age, thanks to smartphones and apps, anything is quite possible. Just do a quick video call and enjoy your virtual caroling session with your family and friends.

Alone-time karaoke

A Christmas session won’t be complete without someone channeling their inner Regine Velasquez in front of the karaoke machine. Singing with family and friends is and will always remain a fun memory to create, but don’t let that stop you from singing the night away and belting out like Mariah Carey.

Express gratitude to family and friends through intimate convos

Other than being a season of giving, Christmas is also usually the time when you express your gratitude to loved ones.

Make family and friends feel seen and appreciated this Christmas by sending them a thoughtful message. Don’t forget to thank them for being part of your year, too.
